As our cats start to age our thoughts and attention turn to their physical health especially when it comes to joint and mobility issues because they are so visible to our eyes.

It is important to remember however that underneath the physical state is the emotional state or those emotions that your cat may experience as their health changes throughout their life.

For my fellow cat parents in Brisbane tonight when Riverfire is on. Here are some simple tips to help keep your kitties calm during the fireworks.

❤ Create a Safe Hideaway. Set up a quiet, cozy spot where your cat can retreat. This could be a covered bed, a cardboard box with a blanket, or even under the bed. Familiar scents (like a blanket or clothing items that smells of you) will also help reassure them in their hideaway.

❤ Keep the Environment Calm. Close the windows, curtains, and doors to reduce noise and flashes. Playing soft music, white noise, or nature sounds can help soothe the noise from outside.

❤ Stay Grounded Yourself. Cats mirror our energy so be aware of your own stress, anxiousness or worry about the noise. Stay calm (deep breaths) and speak softly to your kitties to reassure them if needed.

❤ Don’t Force Comfort. Let your kitty dictate whether they would like cuddles or not. Some cats prefer to hide until the fireworks are over. Respect their space and you will be supporting them.

❤ Support with Natural Aids. Some cats benefit from calming essences, pheromone diffusers, or earthing mats. These tools can help reduce stress naturally and gently.
