I’ve had a little bee 🐝 in my bonnet 👒 lately.

Please make sure that you, or your NOK, regularly check that the supports you’re receiving are value for money. Recently, I came across a situation where a SIL house manager was also arranging other supports. Sometimes (not always), these arrangements can suit the provider who is arranging the extra supports or their roster, rather than being the best option or best value for you, the participant.

For example, if a provider is charging a minimum of three hours plus kilometres to attend group activities, work, or college, there MAY be other options available. It’s wonderful to have help, and I’m sure your support coordinator appreciates the assistance — just be mindful that there isn’t a conflict of interest.

I'll post the how each of the criteria works next week. PS: I am open to a discussion if you think I am off the track.

Love always,
Robin 💛

Barbie just made history with its first-ever autistic doll 💙

Created in partnership with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, the new Fashionistas Barbie includes thoughtful details like:
—▸ A fidget spinner
—▸ an AAC ablet for communication
—▸ Noise-cancelling headphones
—▸ Bendable elbows and wrists for stimming
—▸ Clothing designed to reduce sensory discomfort

Even her gaze is slightly averted, reflecting how some autistic people avoid direct eye contact.

Mattel says the doll was developed over 18 months with autistic advocates to ensure authentic representation. It joins Barbie’s growing lineup of dolls representing disabilities and health conditions — a move advocates say helps autistic kids (and adults) feel seen. 🥹
