🐒 We Grow Episode 2: Biodiversity Explained 🐒

In this episode, I ask a few "What if?" questions. What if we were to lose some (or all) of the species that are currently at risk of extinction? What would this mean for the ecosystems where these plants and animals live?

To explore this, I explain what an ecosystem is and what biodiversity means.

I also look at a few examples: the moa, which became extinct in New Zealand due to hunting, and the humpback whale, whose population has soared following global action 🐳.

You'll also be guided on a brief grounding practice in this episode 🌟.

🌱 The We Grow Podcast 🌱

Introducing Episode 1 of the We Grow podcast. A podcast about planting trees, restoring native ecosystems, community and making a difference in your local area.

In this podcast, I'll be speaking about these themes and also with others who will share their perspectives and knowledge.

My vision for humanity to have a deep respect for nature and to recognise nature as part of the community.

Through this podcast, I hope you feel inspired and empowered to take action to help restore nature to its full health.

Must I Forget?
Remembering to Remember

As I wandered
Placing foot after foot
On the compacted soil
Bush sounds surrounded me
All the shades of green
Puncuating the brown barks
I remembered

As my feet
Dipped beneath the surface
Refreshingly cool water
Consuming my body
Angled boulders encasing
A sky of grey poking through
Canopy leaves
I remembered

I remembered
I am a part
How my breath
Flows through the air
To the next living being
Water sliding over my legs
Underneath a waterfall
One day ends up at the sea

I remembered
How I am connected
To so much that I don't acknowledge
How the mammals in the bush
Know I'm there
And the birds
Announce my presence

I remembered
That we are all one
Although it seems we are many

🐳 Encounters with Majesty 🐳

Under the water
There is a world
Bluer than a sunny sky day
Where the sunlight
Glimmers through the deep
In prisms of light
And gentle giants
Hover
Beneath the surface
Their song
Reverberating endlessly
Where a mother's love
Is so pure
And unconditional
And a mere flick
Of a tail
Can propel the giant
Out of view

It's a world
Few have the luxury of experiencing
And those that do
Struggle to express
The majesty of humpback whales
In mere markings on a page
Open, trusting, they were
Giving us
Memorable glimpses
Into their realm

πŸŒ…There’s magic in a sunrise
Which doesn't last for long
Dancing sparkles on my skin
Like the first notes of a song

πŸŒ… There's magic in a sunrise
A moment of pure delight
Those first few rays awakening the day
The horizon emerging from the night

πŸŒ… There's magic in a sunrise
Not knowing what the day will bring
As dynamic pastels cast a spell
My heart never fails to sing

πŸŒ… And as time moves swiftly on
The sun brightening throughout the sky
The magic seems to dissipate
It's but a memory in my mind's eye

πŸŒ… But wait just a moment now
What if the magic isn't gone?
If you pause and take a gracious breath
And just for a second hold on

πŸŒ… You might find that the magic of a sunrise
Can be captured in your heart
You can hold that golden warmth
Like a magnificent piece of art

πŸŒ… So infuse the magic of the sunrise
And weave it into your day
And you'll have those sparkles to guide you
Right along your way

Lately the spaces in my life have been few and far between. The gaps have been filled in with busyness and I have found myself yearning for space. Gazing at the open ocean and imagining that I could have that much space in my life. I’ve been dedicating the small spaces to me, nurturing myself, admiring sunsets and sunrises, breathing and ensuring I am nourishing my body and moving daily. Spending moments just being without rushing. I wrote this piece a while back, but its relevance is pervasive. It reminds us to always return to our truth, ourselves. The sunrise in one of these pics was on a work day, before I guided a team of voluteers to plant 500 trees. Even amid the hectic event organising, I still paused for a few moments and admired the glorious sky! 🌞🌟🌈

I find being on the beach in the morning is a perfect way to start a day. You'll find me on the beach most mornings practicing yoga or meditation, journalling and always swimming in the ocean. It sets me up for the day ahead, helps me tune into my body and its energy and connect to our precious Mother Earth.

I'd love to share this magic with you, join me for a nature inspired meditation at Alexandra Headland beach on Monday 25th at 6.30am.

It's well known that being in nature has a multitude of psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual benefits. Being in the outdoors can also be really calming for your nervous system. Combine this with meditation, which has similar effects and you have a magic recipe to start your day: grounded and connected.

I'm switching things up and adding a morning beach meditation to my repertoire. I'll be at Alexandra Headland beach at 6.30am on Monday 25th March.

What's your go-to self care practice(s)?

Mine are time in nature, practicing yoga and meditation, connecting with friends and family, laughing, savouring a delicious chai tea.

When I'm really busy and time poor I also love taking some slow conscious breaths, shaking out my body and doing some simple stretches.

I'd love to know what you do to support yourself.
