I've been meaning to write about this for quite a while because this is one of my favourite go-to's, and I make it maybe once or twice a month. It just makes me feel good. And it looks really fancy in a wine glass🍷 because it looks like you're drinking red wine. 🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷🍷
My Sparkling Gut Drink
I’ve been making this little gut drink lately and honestly… it’s kind of magic.
Not in a woo-woo way — just one of those simple things that actually works and makes you feel better.
It all started after I was following Dr. William Davis. He’s the cardiologist who has written multiple books including the Wheat Belly and Super Gut. He talks about this probiotic yeast (yep, yeast!) called Saccharomyces boulardii. It’s not your typical bacteria probiotic — it’s a special kind of yeast that helps your gut bounce back, especially after antibiotics, stress, or travel.
I got curious (as I do) and tried his idea of fermenting it in juice — and now it’s become this lovely, fizzy little ritual that lives on my kitchen bench.
I’ve experimented with both cranberry and pomegranate juice… and the pomegranate version is my favourite. It turns this beautiful ruby colour, a little tart but slightly sweet, and feels more like something you’d sip slowly at sunset than a “health drink.”
When I drink it, my stomach just feels calmer — NO bloating!!!, more settled. My digestion feels stronger. And there’s something so satisfying about knowing it’s alive — all those tiny microbes quietly rebuilding your gut ecosystem while you go about your day.
Here’s how I make it:
Ingredients:
1 litre of pomegranate juice (no sugar, no preservatives like potassium sorbate or sodium benzoate) preferably in a glass jar
1 capsule of Saccharomyces boulardii (I use Bioceuticals SB FlorActiv )
Take off the lid of the juice bottle. Open the capsule and sprinkle it in.
Screw the lid on tight, give it a little shake, then loosen the lid slightly and leave it on the bench for about two days.
By the next day it starts bubbling like it’s alive — which it is — and after around 48 hours (whenever it tastes fizzy, which depends on how warm it is, I pop it in the fridge.
It turns into this lightly sparkling, tangy, pomegranate tonic that feels both refreshing and healing.
I usually make a batch on Sundays so it’s ready by midweek.
I try to drink it within a week of making it because it seems to get bitter the older it is, so drink it up.
I would also recommend introducing this into your diet slowly. Like anything you haven't ever eaten, you should introduce it gradually. Start with a tablespoon, and then if that's okay, the next day have a shot glass. If that's okay, then go up to a little bit more. But definitely introduce any new probiotic/prebiotic food slowly. And if you do react, just back up a little bit and take it slower.
Sometimes I even pour it into a wine glass in the evening — my gut-friendly version of a cocktail.
If your digestion’s been off, or you’ve had antibiotics recently, give it a try.
Or just make it because it’s fun — and because it’s nice to do something small that genuinely loves you back. 💛
If you try this and it works for you, please forward to other people you love and spread the word. I have found it to be amazing and it's really not that expensive and it's SO good for your health.
