Implant weight matters! When choosing a breast implant, it’s important to consider not just the size in CCs but also the weight in grams. CC (cubic centimeters) measures volume, but the actual weight affects how your body feels over time. For example, a 300 CC silicone implant weighs about 300 grams, while an 800 CC implant weighs around 800 grams. Heavier implants can place more strain on your chest and back, potentially impacting posture, comfort, and long-term breast tissue health. Understanding both volume and weight helps you make a choice that balances your aesthetic goals with your long-term well-being.

A 34-year-old mother underwent a bilateral breast reduction and abdominoplasty to help relieve discomfort and support her confidence after pregnancy. At 3 months post-operation, she is healing well, with 229 g removed from the right breast, 103 g from the left, and 578 g and 604 g removed from the abdominal area.

Swelling and nerve irritation after surgery can make the breasts feel numb, overly sensitive, or “different” for a few weeks to months. As the nerves recover, sensation usually returns gradually.
A small number of patients may notice longer-term changes in sensitivity (either reduced or heightened), but complete permanent loss of sensation is uncommon. Your surgeon will discuss factors like implant placement, incision type, and your anatomy, which all influence nerve recovery.

If you’re over 40 and considering breast reduction surgery, I usually recommend having a mammogram before your consultation. This helps give us important baseline information about your breast tissue and ensures there are no underlying changes that need to be checked before surgery.

Dr. Kelly Thornbury often arranges a mammogram during the preoperative period if one hasn’t been done recently - but having it done in advance can help streamline your journey and give us a clearer picture from the start.

Regular breast screening is an important part of women’s health, and even if you’re not planning surgery, keeping up to date with mammograms every 2 years (as recommended for women over 40 by BreastScreen Australia) is a good idea.

Yes ladies - when we say no smoking or va**ng before surgery, it’s not a suggestion - it’s to prevent tissue loss, including the ni**le.

Even one v**e or cigarette can reduce blood flow to the skin after breast surgery. In the worst cases, the tissue - including the ni**le - can be damaged or lost. That’s why we take the no-nicotine rule seriously.

Teardrop (or anatomical) breast implants are uniquely designed to mimic the natural slope of the breast, with more fullness at the bottom and a gentle taper toward the top. To ensure the implant sits in the correct position, a small orientation marker is placed at the bottom of the implant. This marker helps the surgeon confirm that the implant hasn’t rotated - which is important because even a slight turn could alter the breast’s shape or symmetry. While rotation is uncommon, the marker provides a simple and reliable way for surgeons to verify alignment during and after surgery, helping to maintain the desired, natural-looking contour.

People don’t always see the behind-the-scenes - some surgical days can go for 24+ hours with multiple cases back-to-back. Surgeons definitely build stamina… and a strong bladder 😅

Why has my ni**le piercing moved or changed after a breast reduction?

Combining a breast lift and augmentation in the same surgery can sometimes compromise the outcome. A lift tightens and reshapes the breast, while an augmentation stretches the tissues by adding volume - two opposing goals. Performing both at once can increase the risk of wound healing problems, implant malposition, or uneven results. In many cases, staging the procedures allows the tissue to settle and heal properly, leading to a safer and more predictable outcome.
