We’re proud to share that Diabetes Shop is now a stockist of NeedleCalm 💙

For many people, a new diabetes diagnosis doesn’t just mean learning new information — it means learning to inject insulin, often daily, sometimes multiple times a day. That’s a big adjustment, and for some, needle procedures can be a real barrier.

Difficulty with injections can impact confidence, particularly in the early stages of diabetes management. When something feels overwhelming or distressing, it’s much harder to build consistent routines.

NeedleCalm was designed to support comfort during injections and help make those early experiences more manageable, calmer, and less intimidating — especially when someone is facing something new.

By being available through the Diabetes Shop, NeedleCalm can now support:

• people new to insulin injections

• parents supporting children with diabetes

• individuals managing chronic injections long term

• improved confidence and consistency with treatment routines

Small supports can make a meaningful difference when someone is learning to live with diabetes.

We’re grateful to partner with Diabetes Shop to help reduce barriers to care and support people to manage their health with greater confidence.

Because when treatment feels more manageable, people are more likely to be consistent and comfortable — and that matters. 💙

đź’› Why play matters when kids are worried about needles
For many kids, fear isn’t about the procedure itself — it’s about the anticipation, the loss of control, and not knowing what to expect.
That’s exactly why we created the NeedleCalm Kids Activity Kit.
The kit is designed to support therapeutic play — a simple, evidence-informed way to help children process medical experiences in a safe, age-appropriate way. Through colouring, activities, and guided conversation, kids can explore their feelings, ask questions, and build confidence before a needle procedure happens.
🧠 How therapeutic play helps:
Gives children a sense of control and predictability

Helps them understand what’s coming in a non-threatening way

Reduces anxiety by making the experience feel familiar

Supports emotional regulation before and after appointments

Encourages positive coping skills they can use again next time

When paired with NeedleCalm during the procedure, the activity kit helps turn a stressful moment into a supported experience — not just for kids, but for parents too.
This isn’t about pretending procedures don’t exist.
It’s about preparing, supporting, and empowering children so healthcare feels safer over time.
Because calmer experiences today help build confident healthcare users tomorrow đź’š
If your child struggles with needle procedures, small tools — like play, preparation, and comfort — really do make a difference.

Why Medicine Time Can Be So Hard for Kids đź’›

(And what actually helps)

If your child resists taking medicine, you’re not alone — and it’s not because they’re being difficult.

Many kids feel anxious around anything that looks medical, including oral syringes. Even though there’s no needle involved, syringes can remind children of injections or blood tests they’ve had before.

One thing parents often don’t realise is that medicine syringes are usually bigger for a reason. Some medicines need a larger volume to work properly. To a child, though, bigger can feel scarier — especially if they’ve had tough medical experiences before.

Add in:
• an unpleasant taste
• feeling out of control
• surprise or rushing
• past fear or distress

…and medicine time can quickly become overwhelming.

đź’ˇ What actually helps:

✔ Be honest. Don’t say “it won’t hurt” — explain what will happen in simple, age-appropriate language.
✔ Prepare ahead of time. Talk about medicine before it’s needed so it doesn’t come as a shock.
✔ Use comfort positioning. Sit your child upright, on your lap if possible, facing forward — avoid lying them down or holding them flat. Feeling supported and in control reduces distress.
✔ Offer choice where you can. “Do you want to sit on the couch or the bed?”
âś” Go slowly. Pauses are okay.
✔ Plan a reward straight after. Something small and immediate — a sticker, a favourite song, screen time, or a cuddle — helps kids know there’s a positive end point.

Most importantly, acknowledge their feelings. Saying “I know this feels hard” helps build trust far more than minimising the experience.

Helping kids through medicine time isn’t about forcing compliance — it’s about preparing, supporting, and building confidence over time.

We’re excited to share that NeedleCalm and Clinrol are partnering to make clinical trials more accessible, inclusive, and supportive — especially for people who find needle procedures challenging.

If you’ve ever thought about joining a clinical trial but hesitated because of injections, blood tests, or IV infusions — you’re not alone.

Many research studies involve repeated needle procedures. For people with a low tolerance to needle procedures, that can feel like a major barrier. Sometimes it’s enough to stop someone from participating altogether.

NeedleCalm was created to support people who experience discomfort or distress during injections and blood tests — from children through to older adults. By helping improve comfort during needle procedures, our goal is to reduce avoidance and make essential care more manageable.

Through this partnership:

• Clinical trial participants may have access to NeedleCalm during studies involving needle procedures
• Research teams will be encouraged to consider comfort strategies early
• Patients will have clearer pathways to discover suitable trials through Clinrol

Clinical research plays a critical role in improving treatments, medications, and outcomes. But participation should never come at the expense of comfort or dignity.

If you’ve been curious about clinical trials but worried about the needle component, there are now more supportive options available.

You deserve to be involved in research — and to feel supported while doing so.

If you’re interested in learning more about clinical trials and would like to explore options that prioritise comfort during needle procedures, we’d love to connect or guide you toward appropriate resources.

🇦🇺 Skin checks, local anaesthetic injections & comfort — what to expect

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Around 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer in their lifetime, which is why regular skin checks matter.

When you book a skin check with your GP, they’ll examine your skin using a dermatoscope. If a spot looks suspicious, they may recommend a biopsy or removal, which is commonly done on the spot using a local anaesthetic injection. This numbs the area so the procedure itself is usually quick and manageable.

For some people, however, the injection itself is the hardest part — especially for those with a low tolerance to needle procedures or past difficult experiences.

👉 If needle discomfort is a barrier, NeedleCalm can be used during the local anaesthetic injection to help make the experience more comfortable. It’s a simple, supportive option designed to reduce procedural distress and support a calmer needle experience — without changing the medical care being provided.

đź’ˇ Good to know:
• Skin checks are available through your GP
• Many skin checks and procedures attract a Medicare rebate, and some clinics bulk bill
• Local anaesthetic injections are commonly used and help reduce pain during procedures

There’s also evidence that skin checks declined during the pandemic period, meaning some people may be overdue — and delayed checks can delay diagnosis.

🔎 Why booking matters:
âś” Early detection improves outcomes
âś” Local anaesthetic makes procedures more comfortable
âś” Supportive tools can help if needles are a barrier
âś” Medicare helps reduce cost barriers

If you’ve been putting off a skin check because you’re worried about injections, you’re not alone — and there are ways to make the experience calmer and more manageable.

Your skin is worth checking. Early care really does make a difference. đź’›

Late last year, Lauren was contacted by a Registered Nurse who had exhausted every avenue to help her patient undergo a blood test and an urgent iron infusion.

The patient’s needle fear had significantly escalated following a distressing experience during a previous pathology appointment, where her fear was dismissed and she was physically restrained suddenly without her consent on her chest. .

The blood test was unsuccessful—and the psychological impact was profound.

Since then, the patient has required multiple psychology appointments and has experienced delays to necessary treatment, directly affecting her time to diagnosis.

This is the part we don’t always see: how a single negative procedural experience can ripple into long-term avoidance, delayed care, and compounding health consequences.

What stood out to us most was the persistence and compassion of the nurse supporting this family. Despite setbacks—including another failed blood test earlier this week—she continued to advocate, rebook, and support both the patient and parent through the process.

This week, they finally succeeded.

It wasn’t easy.

It was still distressing—for the patient and for the clinician—but they got there.

The photo below captures a small but meaningful moment of relief and reward shared between parent and child.

It mattered.
This story is a reminder that:
• Needle fear is real and can be iatrogenic
• Dismissal and force can cause lasting harm
• Early, trauma-informed approaches are not optional—they are essential
• Clinicians carry this emotional load too

To the nurse involved: you are exactly the kind of clinician our system needs more of.

Persistence, empathy, and advocacy change outcomes—even when the path is hard.

These are the stories that stay with us, and why our work matters.
