Swallowing difficulty (dysphagia) is any problem with sucking, chewing, swallowing, or safely managing food, drink, saliva, or medication. 💊 🍽️

Symptoms of dysphagia generally include coughing, gagging or throat clearing during or after a meal, noisy breathing or a gurgly voice, multiple swallowing, prolonged eating time, failure to consume all the meal, and food left in the mouth. 👄

Did you know? On average, we swallow between 500-700 times a day. 🍴🥢🍼

Learning to read shouldn’t be boring! 🔤📝Today we used animal cards to help remember the final sound in words. Each time we identified the final sound, our superstar got to put the “tail” on each animal 🐄. After that, we used a torch to sound out each sound & blend them together! 🔦

Ahoy, mateys! 🏴‍☠️
In feeding group, our pirates explored each “challenge” on our treasure map, with chocolate coins as our reward! 🪙
Each food challenge encouraged the group to practice controlled, sustained chewing, and build confidence trying new textures 💪
We had so much fun & tried so many new foods! 🍗🍎🧀

Hash Browns! 🥔 Potato is a common “safe food” that children will eat, as it is fairly predictable in its taste, it has a mild flavour, and a consistent appearance.
In feeding therapy, we used this safe food & turned it into an opportunity for exploration, flexibility, and learning. 🌟 Some benefits include:
1️⃣ Exposure to real, whole foods, builds awareness that food comes from real ingredients and not just packets.
2️⃣ Grating potatoes, squeezing out water, shaping patties, all help with sensory exploration.
3️⃣ This shows children that their “safe food” can look or taste a little different, but still be enjoyable. This supports flexibility & reduces rigidity around brand-specific foods.
4️⃣ Fine motor development! Children are practicing hand strengthening and coordination.

Most babies say their first word between 12 - 18 months of age. Ideally, these first words are functional and fulfil a range of communicative purposes for your child. 👶🏻

💛 Today is R U OK? Day 💛
Checking in with someone can make a big difference. Remember, not everyone communicates the same way. As speech pathologists, we know that connection isn’t about how you say it, it’s about making space to listen in whatever way works best.
So today, reach out in the way that feels right, and let someone know you’re here. 💬💛

Did you know that growing up with two (or more!) languages does NOT cause delays in speech or language development? 🚫❌

Research shows that bilingual children:
🌍 Have stronger attention and problem solving skills
🧠 Build flexible thinking and adaptability

Learning two languages at once might mean a child mixes words or takes a little extra time to sort them out, but this is a normal part of bilingual development.
So let’s celebrate bilingualism as the gift it is-helping kids grow into confident, capable communicators in more than one language. 💕
