If you’ve noticed your child acts worse after sugar, you’re not imagining it.

It’s not just “too much energy.”

We explain what’s actually happening in the brain and body (and why behavior changes so fast).

If you’ve ever thought, “why does my child act worse after sugar?”, you’re not imagining it. Many parents notice a clear shift after sugary foods such as more hyperactivity, emotional outbursts, poor focus, or difficulty settling. But it’s not just “too much energy.” There’s a biolog...

A mother recently shared something with Dr. Melillo she never thought she would experience.

Her child, who had been non-speaking, woke her up and said:
“Good morning, Mommy.”

To most people, that might seem small.
To her, it was everything.

As Dr. Melillo often shares, these moments aren’t just about words, they’re about connection, awareness, and the brain finally being able to express what’s been there.

Every child’s journey is different. But when we support the brain in the right way, meaningful changes even small ones can have a profound impact on a family.

At Brain Hub Kids, the licensed Melillo Method Australia Centre, our focus is always on helping children build that connection with themselves and with the people who love them.

That afternoon sugar craving?
It’s not about willpower. It’s biology and here's why 👇

When meals earlier in the day are high in refined carbs, blood sugar rises quickly… then drops just as fast.

That drop leaves your brain low on fuel, triggering strong cravings for something sweet to bring energy back up.

The solution isn’t cutting sugar completely.
It’s stabilising blood sugar from the start of the day.

Focus on building balanced meals with:
• Protein
• Fibre
• Healthy fats

This helps slow glucose release and gives your brain a steady, reliable source of energy from morning through to the afternoon.

Small changes here can make a big difference in your energy, focus, and cravings.

One of the biggest mistakes parents make is turning reflex work into something that feels like homework.

But the brain doesn’t care if it’s an “exercise” or a “game.”

It only cares about the input it’s getting.

Crawling, rolling, pushing cushions, playing Superman… all of that still supports the brain.

For many kids, play actually works better than structured exercises.

When things feel fun and safe, the nervous system stays regulated.

And that’s when integration happens.

So instead of pushing harder, try joining in.

Keep it simple.
Keep it short.
Stop while it’s still fun.

Play isn’t avoiding the work.

For many kids, play is the work.

This is the approach we use at the Melillo Method Australia Centre to support autism, ADHD, communication delays, and child development.

Because you can’t change behaviour
until you understand what’s driving it neurologically.

• What brain imbalance actually means
• Why movement + the vestibular system matter
• The impact of screens + modern environments
• Neurological immaturity vs misdiagnosis
• Practical ways to support your child at home

After 8–12 hours overnight without food, your brain is running low on fuel.

Because your brain relies heavily on glucose for energy, breakfast plays a key role in restoring focus, mood, and mental clarity for the day ahead.

But it’s not just about eating… it’s what you eat.

A brain-supportive breakfast includes:
• Protein
• Fibre-rich carbohydrates
• Healthy fats

This combination helps provide steady, sustained energy instead of a spike and crash.

Simple examples:
• Eggs on wholegrain toast
• Yogurt with nuts and fruit
• Oats with seeds and nut butter

Starting your day this way can make a noticeable difference in focus, energy, and cognitive performance.

If you want a personalised approach to supporting your brain through nutrition, we can help.

📖 Does your child skip words, lose their place, or read very slowly? Reading relies on the brain’s ability to move the eyes smoothly across a page.

When those pathways are underdeveloped, reading becomes tiring and frustrating.

A simple daily exercise, like following a pen or torch with just the eyes, helps strengthen those brain connections.

Think of it as eye gymnastics, quick, playful, and effective.

Just two minutes a day can support better reading fluency and focus.

One of the biggest gaps in how we approach mental health and developmental challenges is this:
we often focus on symptoms, not the underlying cause.

As Dr. Melillo explains, without understanding how the brain develops and how different networks grow, connect, and function, it’s easy to default to managing behaviours rather than addressing what’s driving them.

When we take a root-cause approach, we can begin to identify where development has gone off track and more importantly, what can be done to support change.

At Brain Hub Kids, the licensed Melillo Method Australia Centre, we focus on understanding those underlying brain patterns so support is targeted, not just reactive.

Here are 3 foods to improve your brain function:

Eggs
Rich in choline, which helps produce acetylcholine, essential for memory and learning.

Fatty fish (like salmon)
High in DHA, an omega-3 fat that supports brain cell structure and communication.

Pumpkin seeds
Packed with magnesium and zinc, key for nervous system regulation and protecting the brain.

These small, consistent choices can have a real impact on focus, mood, and cognitive function over time.

If you’re looking to support brain health through nutrition, it starts with the right strategy.

Dr. Carlo Rinaudo joins Dr. Robert Melillo + Xen to unpack what’s really driving focus, emotional regulation, and development in kids.

Most parents are told to manage behaviour.
But behaviour is an output and you can’t change it until you understand what’s happening in the brain and address that first.

In this conversation, they cover:
• Brain imbalance (beyond “left vs right”)
• Why movement + the vestibular system is foundational
• How screens + modern life are shaping development
• Neurological immaturity vs misdiagnosis
• Simple daily strategies to support your child
