Vale Dame Marie Bashir.

The Lebanese Australian community extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Dame Marie Bashir.

Married to Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE for 61 years, and a devoted mother and grandmother, Dame Marie was an extraordinary Australian and one of New South Wales’ most respected public servants.

As the first female Governor of New South Wales (2001–2014), she served with dignity, compassion, and humility. A distinguished psychiatrist and lifelong advocate for mental health, education, and social inclusion, she earned the trust, respect, and affection of the people of New South Wales over a lifetime of service.

Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and all those inspired by her remarkable life and enduring legacy.

May she rest in eternal peace. 🤍🙏

Today, 10 October 2025, is World Mental Health Day.
It’s a day to start conversations, reduce stigma, reach out for support — and connect with our communities.

This year’s theme, Connect with your community, highlights the importance of belonging to places where we feel safe, seen, and heard.

Connection today and every day, is a simple way to care for your own mental health, and the wellbeing of those around you.

Throughout October, Mental Health Australia is sharing tips and reminders in our free 2025 World Mental Health Day calendars to help you check in and connect with your community.
