🚨 NDIS Update🚨 NDIA released an update on Therapy Operational Guideline 16th October – Key changes include clarified rules for therapy supports

The NDIA has made a significant update to the Therapy Operational Guideline, confirming that while therapy supports remain stated under the Improved Daily Living category, there is now greater flexibility in how participants can use this funding.

Key takeaways:

🔹 Therapy supports: Clarified rules for therapy supports, the role of allied health assistants, and specific guidance on what is and isn't considered a therapy support.

🔹 Allied Health Assistants (AHAs): The guideline provides specific guidance on the role and supervision of AHAs delivering delegated therapy activities

🔹 Evidence and reporting: The guideline outlines the evidence required to support therapy requests

🔹 Exclusions: It explicitly lists services that are not considered NDIS-funded therapy supports, such as gym memberships, alternative therapies, animal therapy, social programs, and therapy-in-a-box options.

🚨 New NDIS Guidelines 🚨

There is now a new limit on how participants and their service providers can draw down on funding. Funding periods will usually be set at 3-months on the basis this gives flexibility, it is important to ensure your service agreement is inline with your funding periods.

NDIS service agreements are important because they help ensure that participants and providers are on the same page about the supports being delivered. 🚨 NDIS Update 🚨 Short Term Accommodation (STA) is now called “Short Term Respite” (STR)

The NDIS has officially renamed Short Term Accommodation (STA) to Short Term Respite (STR), a change that better reflects the purpose of this support.

Key Features of Short-Term Respite (STR):
🔹 Duration: Up to 14 days at a time, max 28 days per year.
🔹 Goal: To give primary informal supports (e.g. family) a break while maintaining participant support.

Where and how Short-Term Respite (STR) can be used:
✅ should be planned together with you and your provider, including how often, where, and what level of support is needed.
✅ can be taken in group or individual settings.
✅ standard accommodation for you.
✅ standard accommodation for a support worker if overnight support is needed.

Short-Term Respite (STR) cannot be used for:
❌ Holidays or travel expenses.
❌ Meals, activities, or general living costs.
❌ Accommodation for informal supports.
❌ Duplication of existing NDIS supports.

This update is a step towards clearer and more person-centered language in the NDIS.
