Dr Sarah recently had the un-bear-lievable opportunity to perform surgery on a very well-known Canberra local!
If you’ve visited the National Zoo & Aquarium Canberra anytime in the past 15 years, you’ve likely spotted Arataki the Sun Bear exploring his enclosure, enjoying his enrichment toys, and charming everyone with his cheeky personality.
Recently, Arataki developed chronic dry eye and entropion, a condition where the eyelids roll inward and rub against the surface of the eye. Despite his incredible keepers training him to voluntarily accept daily eye drops, the condition progressed to the point where surgery was the best option for his long-term comfort.
On surgery day, Arataki received a gentle injectable sedative, another behaviour he has been trained to accept willingly, showing the amazing level of trust he has in his keepers. Once Arataki was sleepy, his keepers and the zoo’s veterinary team safely entered his enclosure, transported him onto the surgery table, and began his general anaesthesia.
Dr Sarah then performed surgery, including long acting medication implants for his dry eye and an eyelid lift to readjust the hairs rubbing on his eyes. The procedure went smoothly, and Taki recovered safely and comfortably.
Arataki will continue to have regular check-ups with Dr Sarah to ensure his eyes stay healthy. We’re sure he’ll continue being a visitor favourite with his adorable snout, gentle nature, and hilarious antics.
💛🐾 Get well soon, Arataki! Let us know if you’ve spotted him at the zoo!
