This week our Exercise Physiologist, Bovan, takes us through each stage of Parkinson’s and the powerful role of exercise at each one.

Part II of MIP Dementia Series focuses on early signs of dementia - the common and not so common and what to do in the early stages. So much of dementia is navigating the emotional changes and it’s easy to feel lost or overwhelmed or scared but we and other health professionals are here to help!

To celebrate NSW Women’s Week we discuss why *women* in particular should strength train and the specific benefits at every stage of life.

Not sure where to start? No problem. We are happy to answer any questions or provide resources!

Dementia is more than memory loss.

In our dementia series, we explore how it changes how a person thinks, moves, feels and experiences the world around them and how they can navigate this.

We also look at how we, as carers and allied health professionals can best support those with dementia, especially through the lens of movement and function.

If you or someone you love is living with dementia, you are not alone 💚

Think exercise isn’t for you anymore? (Fortunately) that is simply just not true. In part III of our MYTH series, we look at some common misconceptions around exercising when older. 💪✨

“I’m too old” 👵👴
Good news - age is not a barrier! Muscles can grow, joints can move better, soft tissue can lengthen. It’s never too late to start training 🌱

“My joints hurt” 🦴
Arthritis and joint wear are common as you age but appropriate and tailored exercise can actually lubricate joints and reduce pain over time 🚶‍♀️

“I can’t do much” 🐢
That’s okay! Start small and go at your own pace. Your body will adapt even if its slow but little by little you’ll notice you can do more 👍

“I’m afraid of falling” ⚖️
Also a very normal part of getting older especially if you have fallen before. However, avoiding movement can increase this fear. Exercise builds strength & balance to help prevent falls 🛡️

“I have health problems” ❤️🫁
From heart and lung conditions to arthritis, Parkinson’s or stroke - exercise can be tailored to you and you can still receive all the benefits 🎯

“I get short of breath” 🌬️
The right exercise program (even for lung conditions like emphysema or COPD) can improve breathing and is one of the most effective ways to build endurance 💙

“I’m always tired” 😴
Decreased energy levels are normal as you age but small, regular movement can boost energy, improve sleep, lift mood, and reduce fatigue over time ☀️

“I’ve never been into exercise” 🤷‍♂️
Everyone starts somewhere! The hardest part is beginning - once you do, those feel good endorphins kick in and you may be surprised how great you feel 😄

👉 Move and Improve
It’s never too late, we promise!

Would I benefit from physiotherapy? 🤔

Physiotherapy isn’t just for injuries especially as you get older. You may benefit if you’re experiencing:

🔹 Pain or discomfort that won’t go away
Ongoing aches or pains that last weeks or months do not have to be your new normal

🔹 Stiffness in the morning that eases with movement
Feeling stiff when you wake up or after sitting for a while can be your body telling you that it wants to move more

🔹 Feeling unsteady or worried about falling ⚖️If your balance feels off or you’re avoiding activities because of fear, physiotherapy can help build strength and confidence especially as you get older

🔹 Everyday tasks feeling harder than they used to 🪑Getting out of bed, standing up from a chair, climbing stairs, bending, or reaching shouldn’t feel like such hard work.

🔹 You want to move better and feel better 💙Physiotherapy can help you feel more in control of your body, confident in your movement and lead to a healthier, happier way of living

✨ Physiotherapy is about keeping you active, independent, and doing the things you enjoy!

🏃‍♂️💨 What is Exercise-Induced Asthma?

Ever feel short of breath, tight-chested, or wheezy during exercise? 😰

You might be experiencing Exercise-Induced Bronchi constriction (EIB) - a condition where airways narrow during intense physical activity. 🫁

🔹 Who’s affected?
➡️ 90% of people with asthma experience EIB
➡️ 20% of the general population may have symptoms—even without an asthma diagnosis
➡️ Elite athletes? Increased risk of up to 70% !

🔹 Common triggers:
❄️ Cold, dry air
🌫️ High pollution levels
🤧 Recovering from a respiratory illness
🚬 Exposure to smoke, chemicals, or fumes

🔹 How is EIB diagnosed?
A lung function test before and after using a bronchodilator to help rule out chronic asthma.

🔹 How can a physiotherapist help?
💨 Breathing retraining techniques to stabilize your respiratory rate:
✔ Diaphragmatic breathing (deep belly breathing)
✔ Nasal breathing (inhale through the nose)
✔ Pursed-lip breathing (slow exhalation through pursed lips)
✔ Relaxation techniques to control breathing

If exercise leaves you gasping for air, you’re not alone and you’re not just ‘unfit’! With the right management, you CAN stay active. 💪
