Gather Your Strength 💪

Labour is unpredictable. It can come on fast or it can come and go before really establishing itself. When you start feeling those first contractions REST REST REST. You will need your strength for what’s to come.

Oxytocin Boosters 😊

If you’ve been through any birth education, you’ll probably be aware of the importace of oxytocin in labour and birth. But oxytocin’s job isn’t done. It also encourages bonding with your baby, stimulated the letdown for your breastmilk and promotes wound and tissue repair.

Due Dates 🗓️

While the Australian Mother and Babies report (2023) shows that 91% of babies were born at ‘Full Term’ this actually covers gestational ages between 37-41 weeks. Only about 5% of babies are born on their due date.
Due dates are typically calculated based on your last mentrual period and adding 40 weeks. However, a lot of women don’t experience a standard 28 day period or experience irregular periods which can impact the accuracy of this estimation.

Early pregnancy scans will also confirm or be used to adjust due dates as, in early pregnancy, the fetus is growing at a very typical rate.

Basically, due dates are a bunch of guess work and baby will come when baby wants too 🫠

For those of you in those last few week of pregnancy or who have gone ‘over’ their due date - I know this isn’t helpful BUT I want you to know it doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you! 🫶

Birth Support 🤗

No matter who you decide to have in the room with you when your a giving birth the heart of the matter should be the same. Your person or your team should be creating an environment of respect, safety and presence.

Birth support people - your job isn’t about trying to ‘fix’ things or direct the process. You are there to hold space for the birth journey, however it may unfold.

Birth support should be love in action 💗

Postpartum Support Ideas 📋

Your only job should be healing, bonding with and getting to enjoy your little newborn bubble. This is why it is important to think about the types of support you might need BEFORE baby comes.

What things don’t need to be on your plate? Who can you ask to help out? Do you maybe need some professional support?

✅ Practical Support - Who is going to be taking on the daily chores around the house?
✅ Emotional Support - Who makes you feel seen and not judged? Who are you comfortable opening up to about your struggles?
✅ Logistical Support - Depending on what your birth and/or recovery is like, you may have a lot of appointments in those first weeks. Keeping on top of appointments and paperwork, while healing, while looking after and bonding with your new baby can feel very overwhelming. If you have older children, it might be their schedules that you may need some help in managing.
✅ Peer Support - We need each other! No one understand what it feels like, like another new mum.

You do not need to be doing everything! Going from being able to do everything yourself, whenever you need to, to suddenly needing support can be a huge adjustment. Surrender to the idea of needing support!

Support Circles and Boundaries 🔘

Even if you are one of the lucky ones with a big village it is still important for you to consider the levels of support you would like during that postpartum period. Not everyone fits into that smallest, closest circle. Not everyone makes you feel safe, seen and cared for. Some people need clear boundaries.

⭕️ Inner circle: Who makes you feel safe, seen and cared for. Who can you lean on for all types of support and you feel comfortable having vulnerable conversations with?

⭕️ Middle circles: People who might need more boundaries. You might not be comfortable having them in your space in those first days, b***s out, leaking everywhere. But you might be willing to ask them to drop off coffee or groceries. Or maybe they could help out with school drop off/pick up.

⭕️ Outer circle: Professional support. If something is wrong or you need additional help, who can you call? Midwives? GP? Lactation consultant? Physio? etc.

No one is entitled to you or your baby. You are allowed to protect your peace with no guilt. You do not need a village that drains you.

‘What you need, when you need it. 🫂

Perinatal Mental Health Week 2025 (23–29 November) is centred on the powerful theme: “What you need, when you need it.”

This theme reflects our shared belief that timely, tailored support can make all the difference for parents across Australia.

This week is about meeting parents where they are. For some, it may be finding clarity and guidance on the path ahead. For others, it’s knowing that help is here for you right now.

Perinatal Mental Health Week shines a light on the challenges parents may face during pregnancy and early parenthood. It is a time to share resources, open pathways to support, and reduce the stigma surrounding perinatal mental health.

Birth Plans? Birth Preferences? Birth Mapping? ↔️

You’ve probably heard of the term ‘birth plan.’ It’s basically a document you give your healthcare provider/team leading up to your birth so they are aware of your birthing preferences. Leading up to my first birth I Googled this so many times, looking for templates etc. and using that as the starting point of my birth education.

Look, if that works for you, great! Stop reading.
However, during my second pregnancy I came across and it really changed my approach and also made it easier for my partner articulate my preferences in any given context. During the mapping process you basically go through all the forks in the road you may be faced with in your birth journey.
