A neighbor in his community approached Tom to see if he would consider manufacturing a hair shampoo for a local network marketing company. Somewhat unfamiliar with how to make shampoo, he took this challenge head on and immersed himself in research. Intrigued by what he had learned, Tom yearned for more knowledge and information. He poured over volumes of clinical studies, medical journals, and scientific data to learn more about the nature of hair care and skin care products. He went to his shower and picked up a bottle of shampoo to read the ingredients. He was in for the shock of his life! He learned that many of the same chemicals he used to make industrial cleaning agents such as garage floor degreasers, car wash soap, even industrial antifreeze and brake fluid were being used in his everyday hair shampoo! He called the chemical companies that supplied him with ingredients for his industrial cleaners to inquire about differences between the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate he used in his industrial cleaners and the Sodium Lauryl Sulfate listed in the ingredients on the label of his hair shampoo. To his utter surprise, the chemical companies reported that there were no differences at all. They were exactly the same chemicals. How could this be? Was this a mistake? After all, the people handling harsh chemicals like these in his manufacturing plant were required to wear rubber gloves, masks, and other protective gear to avoid contact with the skin. Yet, these same chemicals were being used in common personal care products like hair shampoo, under arm deodorant, and skin lotion. Tom decided to set a new course for his company; to find safe alternatives to potentially harmful ingredients found in many common personal care products. It was the beginning of what has become known as the Mower Mission. Over the next 23 years, Tom went on to bring several more exciting new discoveries to the market and has become a well-known scientific expert. He has formulated some of the most extraordinary, best-selling products in the health and wellness industry.
