Working in the birth space its sometimes easy to forget what’s going on outside of our little niche and to my surprise, I’ve listened in on a multiple conversations this week saying that they’ve never heard of this word before… So it’s officially official. Not enough people are talking about the word: matrescence! ✨

The huge physical, emotional, hormonal and identity shift that happens when someone becomes a mother.

We prepare women endlessly for birth (important). But we often miss the opportunity to acknowledge and prepare for the transformation that comes afterwards.

And when mothers don’t have language for what they’re experiencing, they often assume something is wrong with them. ❤️‍🩹

But nothing is wrong! You’re moving through a huge developmental transition, just like adolescence.

It’s something we hope to change with our Big Newborn Energy class!🤰🏼 The more we talk about matrescence, the more we can normalise the experience and better support mothers through it.

So consider this your permission to start saying the word too! 🤍

Just midwife things…
From black, sticky meconium… to that ✨iconic✨ mustard moment 💛

One of the BEST little signs your breastfed bub is getting what they need 🙌🏼

💩 What’s normal for breastfed baby poo?

• Day 1–3: thick, black, tar-like (meconium)
• Day 3–5: greeny/brown → transitioning
• After that: yellow/mustard, seedy, sometimes a bit runny

💛 Colour: think peanut butter (yes, really)
💛 Texture: soft, seedy, can look like it has little grains(no idea where the grains come from)
💛 Smell: surprisingly mild, ye**ty 🍺

⏰ How often?
• In the early weeks: at least 2-3 decent poos a day (often way more 💩💩💩)
• Some babies go after EVERY feed
• After ~6 weeks: some babies poo less often (even every few days) and that can still be normal

✨ That golden poo = a well-fed, breastfed babe ✨

If it’s pale/white, red, frothy green or consistently black after those early days → always get it checked

Your baby might not read the textbook… but their nappy tells a pretty good story 😉
