The sleepy side lying breastfeed, perfect for after giving birth to rest the sore bits and how I manage to sneak in a few relaxing moments with shoulders and neck not tightened up and next to my ears! Sneaky in my World Breastfeeding Week post at the eleventh hour (.)(.)

3 years into breastfeeding and spent the last 16 months of it tandem feeding. Has it always been an easy road? Absolutely not! But with a boat load of determination and so much SUPPORT, I’ve been able to feed both my children for what society considers extended breastfeeding. This years theme is all about providing support for women in their breastfeeding journey.

If you are having difficulties, an IBCLC is best. They are the highest trained professionals in lactation (aka breastfeeding!). It’s important to note that GPs, nurses, paediatricians, OBs have knowledge of breastfeeding and promote it but do not necessarily have extensive specialist knowledge on it. Most of the time it’s based on their personal experiences and not additional qualifications. So always seek an IBCLC!!

Whilst it is natural it does not mean it’s easy—quite the opposite! Very much a learned skill for both Mom and baby. Everyone’s feeding journey is going to look different but as long as you have been supported and feel good with your journey that is what’s important. Please be kind to yourself on this journey, we all are doing our very best.

Yes, yes you should!

The pelvic floor isn’t just for pregnant or women who have just birthed to to rehab.

🪄 If you grew up playing high impact sports such as horseback riding, soccer, volleyball or basketball

🪄 Unresolved low back pain that traditional rehabilitation methods aren’t helping (Physiotherapy, Pilates, Exercise Physiology)

🪄 Urinary or bowel issues (urgency, frequency)

🪄 Pain with s*x or dysfunction

The pelvic floor supports all our organs ALL DAY LONG so you want to make sure it’s functioning optimally.

36. Well and truly on the slide to the next decade. A beautifully chaotic day spent with my littlest loves topped with cake and bubbles.

Here’s hoping for a bit more sleep this year, heading stateside and more of these little moments.

2021—Nearly impossible to pick 10 favourite photos from this year but alas here’s some pretty darn special moments from the year. The addition of a baby girl, a lockdown with two under two, some fantastic work opportunities and enjoying all the small moments.
Here’s to 2022 as I think it’s going to be a pretty great year for Team Collins.

Also we need to start taking some more photos of just us—couldn’t find one from this past year 🙈

It’s very straightforward—we are all different and co-management is key!

As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist working in the women’s health space I see women’s during their preconception, pregnancy, postpartum and postnatal periods and beyond!

It’s my role to ensure they are building strength, improving functional movements patterns(aka balancing out all those one armed movements), balancing biomechanics, coordinating their pelvic floor and diaphragm and assisting the women’s body to adapt to the demands of motherhood.

By working together we can cover all bases and ensure women are supported postnatally.

The Pelvic Floor—

What’s common vs normal. A little video I did for Recognising early dysfunction and understanding where your pelvic floor is currently at can prevent issues later on down the track.

You’ve laced up your runners, put on your “good” leggings and ready to get back to exercise after baby—go you! Make sure you take note of the below and if you experience any of these whilst exercising it’s time to stop and see your health care provider before resuming exercise again.

Abdominal Pain. Could be the result of lingering after pains or possibly a sign of infection.

Urinary leakage. ‘Stress incontinence’ is the most common form of urinary incontinence following pregnancy. It is experienced as involuntary urine loss that occurs during periods of increased intra-abdominal pressure, such as with coughing, sneezing, lifting, and exercise. This type of incontinence is generally caused by a weak pelvic floor.

Feelings of va**nal pressure or bulging (prolapse). Common descriptions of prolapse include feelings of pressure in the va**na or the feeling that something is in the way or protruding. Discomfort, friction or difficulty with in*******se or inserting a tampon can also be common.

Pelvic pain. Sexual discomfort or pain during in*******se, or any unexplained pelvic region pain.

Presence of tight scar tissue. Poor scar tissue mobility on the abdominal wall from a caesarean section or on the perineum from episiotomies or tearing during delivery can prevent the pelvic floor muscles from working properly.
