Massive news following NDIS Minister Mark Butler's Press Club address, with changes announced for NDIS Plans, eligibility and the market.

Changes will include:

▶️ A new NDIS eligibility process
▶️ Commissioning of intermediaries and SIL providers
▶️ Delayed rollout of new framework plans
▶️ 90% of payments to go to registered providers

The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission is increasing compliance action on providers supporting people with dysphagia (difficulty swallowing).

Following a nationwide campaign with 184 site visits across 98 providers, the Commission identified both good practice and gaps in mealtime safety. A new compliance intervention will now run until March 2026, targeting providers known to present risks.

In her latest article, Paula explores how providers can reduce choking risks for people who have difficulty swallowing.

At a minimum providers should:
> Identify whether any participants they support may be at risk of choking or dysphagia.
> Arrange an assessment by an appropriately qualified practitioner, such as a speech pathologist, if dysphagia is suspected.
> Ensure workers are trained to recognise symptoms of dysphagia and know how to report incidents.
> Ensure staff are trained, assessed as competent and consistently follow a participant’s mealtime management plan.
> Maintain a clear incident management process and document actions taken after any event.
