Hills that Sam Johns, one of our incredible social workers, would die on as a neuro-affirming practitioner πŸ‘‡

1. Diagnoses do have value – they can help people form identity, social supports, and connections.
2. Neurodivergent folks do not have "poor social skills" if they communicate in different ways to neurotypical people.
3. Different forms of communication, like sign language, gestures and body language, are just as valid as the use of spoken words.
4. Neurodivergent folks' ability to care for themselves, complete tasks, or pursue goals can be different on any given day – and that is okay!
5. Language matters – respecting the way neurodivergent communities want their experiences to be spoken about is key to providing affirming support.

This International Wheelchair Day, Lizzie is showing us how her wheelchair allows her to live her best life! β™ΏπŸ’›

With the aid of her chair, Lizzie can make the short journey from her Woy Woy home to the train stationβ€”and from there, she can go anywhere. Whether she's visiting her family, going to the gym or the shops with her friends, or heading all the way to Sydney, Lizzie's wheelchair gives her the confidence to access her community on her own terms.

Today, we celebrate accessibility, independence, and the power of mobility aids to open up opportunities.

Today is the anniversary of the National Apology to the Stolen Generations.

The Apology acknowledged the deep harm caused by the government-sanctioned removal of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families. Today stands not only as a reflection on a devastating past but as an opportunity to be a part of building a more inclusive and understanding nation.

Understanding begins with listening. Listen to the resilient stories of Stolen Generations survivors as shared through the Healing Foundation's "Telling Our Stories" series and join the healing journey.
