THERAPY METHODS APPLIED AT VIANGELIC
The Music Therapy Social Group program (18+) at Viangelic is built upon music therapy and behavioral intervention methods that have been widely researched and applied in clinical practice, aiming to support the development of social skills, regulate emotions, and improve the quality of community participation for adults.
1. Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT)
NMT is a music therapy method based on neuroscience, using musical elements such as rhythm, melody, and structure to directly impact brain function.
In group activities, NMT is applied to improve attention span, motor coordination, and social response.
For example, using a steady drum beat to help participants maintain focus, wait their turn, and respond appropriately when interacting with the group.
2. Improvisational Music Therapy
This method encourages participants to freely create sounds, melodies, or rhythms without prior musical skill. The therapist acts as a companion, responding to music in a supportive and expansive way.
For example, a participant plays a random sequence of sounds on a keyboard, and the therapist responds with a corresponding drum beat to create a “musical dialogue,” thereby promoting connection and safe emotional expression.
3. Human-Centered and Trauma-Informed Practices
All activities are designed based on the individual needs, abilities, and pace of each person, while ensuring a safe, non-judgmental environment that respects the participant's life experiences.
For example, participants are given the right to choose their instrument, level of participation, or pause when feeling overwhelmed, helping to reduce anxiety and increase self-control.
4. Positive Behavior Support (PBS)
PBS focuses on understanding the causes of behavior and building positive support strategies rather than controlling interventions.
In music groups, PBS is integrated through clear activity structures, reinforcing appropriate behavior, and encouraging positive interaction.
For example, specific praise when participants wait their turn to play music or cooperate with others helps increase the likelihood of maintaining positive social behavior.
5. Visual Support and Clear Structure
Viangelic uses visual schedules, visual symbols, and consistent activity sequences to help participants anticipate and feel secure during group activities.
For example, a visual group activity sequence chart helps participants know when to play music and when to relax, thereby reducing anxiety and increasing participation.
All of the above methods are flexibly integrated by Viangelic into each Music Therapy Social Group session (18+), ensuring that therapeutic goals are achieved while creating a positive, respectful, and highly connected musical environment for each individual.
