Today we're raising awareness around invisible disabilities, for International Day of People with Disability. 🥰

It can be hard to know if someone is living with a disability, because 90% of disabilities in Australia can't be seen.

A disability is a condition of the body or mind that makes it harder for a person to do certain activities and interact with the world around them. They can be visible, hidden, permanent or episodic.

Disabilities that may not be visible include 👇
➡️ mental health conditions – for example, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and depression
➡️ autism and sensory processing issues
➡️ cognitive impairment, such as dementia, brain injury and intellectual disabilities
➡️ physical health conditions, such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue, diabetes and incontinence
➡️ deaf or hard of hearing
➡️ blind or low vision.

People living with disability are a diverse group of people with a wide range of needs. Disability can affect everyone in different ways.

By raising awareness of disabilities that can't be seen, we can help build more supportive, understanding communities.

Bipolar Disorder affects 1 in 50 Australians each year and often develops during teenage years or early adulthood. 🧠

It's a chronic condition that involves intense mood changes, where people go from having extreme highs (manic or hypomanic episodes) to extreme lows (depressive episodes).

Episodes can last for weeks, and sometimes months. If you have bipolar disorder, you might feel like your moods don't make sense in certain situations. 💬

Bipolar disorder is complex, and far from feeling bouts of sadness and happiness. It can feel isolating, confusing and exhausting for those diagnosed.

If you believe you have bipolar disorder, please book an appointment with your GP.

On behalf of Zindzibility we want to wish everyone a happy Australia day, however we also want to remind people that Australia Day is also an opportunity to recognise the survival of the indigenous people and their culture. Despite colonisation, discrimination and comprehensive inequalities, we continue to practise their traditions, look after the land and make their voices heard in the public sphere.

Today is World Leprosy Day. The day was chosen by French humanitarian Raoul Follereau in 1953 to coincide with the anniversary of Mahatma Ghandi's death on 30th January 1948. World Leprosy Day raises awareness of a disease that many people believe to be extinct. Today it is not just the disease that is forgotten, but the people too.
