Gippsland people experiencing breast and lung cancer, and their families, are able to receive the expert care and support from specialist cancer nurses at Latrobe Regional Hospital thanks to the support of the McGrath Foundation.

LRH welcomes Jo Wilson and Sarah Greenwood who are McGrath Cancer Care Nurses supporting people experiencing lung cancer, as well as Leah Savage who is a McGrath Foundation Cancer Care Nurse supporting people experiencing breast nurse.

Jo, Sarah and Leah are helping patients understand their diagnosis and treatment, coordinate appointments and navigate the health system as well as providing emotional and psychosocial support to people at their most challenging time.

For Gippsland, this means more local access to specialised cancer care, reduced need to travel, stronger continuity of support, and better overall patient experiences and outcomes.

We thank the McGrath Foundation for supporting our region and helping ensure that no one goes through cancer without care.

A Gippsland daughter’s love is helping keep cancer care closer to home ❤️

In 2024, Renee Winterton shaved her head in honour of her father Geoff while he was undergoing treatment at Latrobe Regional Health, raising $19,000 for cancer care.

Thanks to Renee and the incredible support of the community, LRH has purchased a $12,800 defibrillation unit and cardiac monitor.

The equipment allows cancer patients with pacemakers or other implanted cardiac devices to safely receive chemotherapy or radiation therapy locally.

Until now, many of these patients had to travel to Melbourne for treatment. The new equipment means up to 200 Gippsland families each year can receive care closer to home.

“This new machine is in honour of my dad, Geoff, who sadly passed away in October 2024,” Renee said.

“I’m so happy we were able to purchase this equipment. It will mean so much for patients to receive treatment locally and not have to travel.”

Ever wondered what happens in the Emergency Department?

LRH has launched this great explainer of what happens when you visit the ED.

A trip to the ED can feel a bit overwhelming, especially when you don't know what to expect.

We take you behind the scenes, from checking in, the triage process and how patients are prioritised depending on the urgency of their condition.

Understanding the process can make you feel a bit less stressed, while making sure everyone is getting the care they need.

And a huge shout out to the team from The View From Here · Design Studio who worked with us to produce this video.

The LRH community mental health team came together this morning to celebrate International Women's Day and honour the women who make a difference in mental health care every day.

From clinicians and peer workers to carers and community members, women are at the heart of compassionate, recovery-focused support.

Staff wore purple, enjoyed tasty treats and heard from guest speakers including Register of Psychiatry Dr Maria Fernanda Ortiz Pesantez.

She spoke about the importance of correctly diagnosing women and providing a safe space to talk about their health.

The team also met with local mental health provider NEAMI and learnt all about healthy eating with a display about women’s nutrition.

Today allows us to celebrate progress, reflect on the work still to be done, and commit to continuing to create safe, supportive spaces for all women.

Meet Emily Pitzner, our superstar Leisure and Lifestyle Assistant who helps patients who are feeling a bit uneasy, unsettled or just need some extra support during their stay at LRH.

Emily can be seen with her trolley of treasures with activities such as puzzles, sensory toys, art and craft materials or magazines for patients who need a little something extra in addition to their medical care.

She sees a range of patients via a referral basis from other staff who have identified they could benefit from her help.

This includes supporting people with physical disabilities, mental health issues, cognitive impairment, dementia or people who need help settling in.

“It all depends on what their interests are, some like a chat, others like music, I try to make their stay a little more pleasant,” Emily said.

“Patients tend to feel more open and happier when I visit as I can provide reassurance and validate their feelings. I build rapport with them so they can trust me.

“We know the longer people stay at hospital, the more likely they are to get bored or frustrated.”

The Leisure and Lifestyle Assistant role is a new initiative at LRH, which Emily began late last year, and has been a hit with patients and families gaining a lot of great feedback.

She loves the rewards when she sees patients with a smile on their face.

“I love my job, this role reflects on who I am as a person.”
