Meet Emily Pitzner, our superstar Leisure and Lifestyle Assistant who helps patients who are feeling a bit uneasy, unsettled or just need some extra support during their stay at LRH.
Emily can be seen with her trolley of treasures with activities such as puzzles, sensory toys, art and craft materials or magazines for patients who need a little something extra in addition to their medical care.
She sees a range of patients via a referral basis from other staff who have identified they could benefit from her help.
This includes supporting people with physical disabilities, mental health issues, cognitive impairment, dementia or people who need help settling in.
“It all depends on what their interests are, some like a chat, others like music, I try to make their stay a little more pleasant,” Emily said.
“Patients tend to feel more open and happier when I visit as I can provide reassurance and validate their feelings. I build rapport with them so they can trust me.
“We know the longer people stay at hospital, the more likely they are to get bored or frustrated.”
The Leisure and Lifestyle Assistant role is a new initiative at LRH, which Emily began late last year, and has been a hit with patients and families gaining a lot of great feedback.
She loves the rewards when she sees patients with a smile on their face.
“I love my job, this role reflects on who I am as a person.”
