TIGHT MUSCLES = WEAK MUSCLES?
It might surprise you, but when your muscles feel tight, they’re often not just “short”, they’re under active and weak. Stretching alone isn’t the fix. You need to build strength too. 💪
Why Do Muscles Feel Tight?
Muscles can feel tight because they’re:
👉 Overworked & compensating for weak surrounding muscles
👉 Protecting an unstable joint
👉 Neurologically under active due to injury or movement dysfunction
Stretching might give temporary relief, but it doesn’t address the underlying cause.
What the Evidence Says:
👉Research shows that combining strength training with mobility work is more effective than stretching alone for improving flexibility and function.
👉Strength training through full range of motion increases flexibility comparably to static stretching (Morton et al., 2011; Afonso et al., 2021).
👉Strength work helps the nervous system feel “safe” enough to allow full movement, so your muscles don’t need to stay locked tight.
💡Example:
Tight hamstrings? Instead of just stretching them, we’ll assess why they’re tight. Often, weak glutes or poor pelvic control are to blame. Strengthening those areas can reduce tension and improve your overall movement.
