Risby Street is one of the last remaining streets in Ulverstone, Tasmania with a beautiful green canopy from 80 year old elm trees, planted by the Tourist and Progress Association in 1947 - 'to beautify the town'.
The Central Coast Council want to 'uglify' the street by chopping down 25 of these valuable urban assets, replacing some of these with concrete and carparks and others with a tiny shrubs that have no shade benefits at all.
The street would become stark and barren, reflecting the harsh summer sun, like many other streets in the town. This image shows how the street can be one of the most beautiful in the town by retaining the trees and decorating them with street art by local artists.
Ulverstone needs more trees! Many councils across Australia promote greening strategies for their community and see mature trees as vital assets. Why not the Central Coast Council?
