For the health care worker in your life...

Dear Health Care Worker,

I know that you are wired to care, which is largely why you do what you do. You are also most likely empathic, go over and beyond your call of duty, and put others before yourself. You may also feel guilty to stop and look after your needs, brushing your tiredness, worry, and anxiety aside to look after and lift others. While you are strong and caring, you are also human. You also have a stack of dishes in the sink, mouths to feed, remote learning to do, and fears about this chaotic world. You are not required to be on call 24/7, fix everything, and carry the weight of the world. The onslaught over the last 17 months has been relentless, and isn't likely to ease anytime soon. The last minute patients you have squeezed in, the fears of others you listen to and see, the rushed meals at your desk, and being stretched oh so thin in every direction can lead to a snap.

You are allowed to be you...to be vulnerable, to not have the answers, to be tired, to take a break...to just be. So stop. Breathe. Look after yourself, without guilt.

Care for the carer is vital, not optional.

From,
A Health Care Worker

Domestic violence is more common than you think. Abusers don't care about your social status, education, culture, niceness. If you are in an abusive situation, don't feel embarrassed or ashamed to reach out for help.

Sometimes, struggle is good.
03/11/2020

Sometimes, struggle is good.

Let your kids struggle....sometimes.

Yes, you heard me right. Surely, how on earth can you watch this precious human being whom you have loved and cared for and wrapped up in organically-sourced cotton wool since you first knew of their existence, experience pain of any sort, especially when it is within your power to wipe that pain away?

Have you ever watched babies desperately try to reach objects just outside their reach? Or toddlers clumsily attempt to do up their zips or wear their clothes? They are S.L.O.W. As we feel the pressure of the clock ticking, and the pressure rising within those tiny beings as they struggle with these tasks, we jump in and 'fix' the problem. Everybody is happy right?

What happens just before a butterfly emerges? They struggle their way out of a cocoon, enabling their wings to gain strength. It would be easy to snip open that cocoon and free the butterfly...but we have deprived those wings of its struggle and therefore, reaching its full potential. Struggle is part of life.

Its the same with our children. Some struggles are good for them. I have known of parents who 'snip open the cocoon' far too often for their 'kids,' even well into adulthood. Let them try to reach their toys, let them attempt to wear their clothes (even if it is buttoned a little wrong), let them feed themselves (even if food gets plastered all over the floor), let them carry their school bag, let them clean their room, let them do their own science projects (even if it 'could be better'), let them write their own college entrance essays, let them write their own PhD thesis! Let them struggle...let them grow.

Trust that your children will turn to you when they need you. Trust that they can conquer their battles, if given the room to. When we give them this space, we empower them, build their confidence, teach them how to handle difficult emotions and situations, and strengthen their wings. After all, you don't want to be doing your "kid's" PhD thesis for them when they are 30 now do you??
