BENEFITS OF ART THERAPY FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE LIVING WITH ASD AND ADHD
Art Therapy is an intensive therapeutic support service that combines Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy approaches.
With Art Therapy as part of early and ongoing intervention, children and young people can grow to fulfill their full potention. Art Therapy can help in 3 main ways.
1. SELF AWARENESS
It can be difficult for all of us to truly hear ourselves sometimes. Being neurodivergent can make this even more challenging. If children and young people can feel heard and understood without judgement they can develop a strong sense of themselves and their world. Accepting their difference and striving to be their best selves will help them grow in confidence.
2. COMMUNICATION
The challenge for children and young peole living with ASD and ADHD is connecting the aspects of the brain that regulates thoughts, emotions and impulses. Being creative slows this process down and allows young people to make conscious communication choices. Taking this learning into their world and better articulating their thoughts and emotions to others can support the creatinon of healthy relationships.
3. FUNCTIONALITY
The Art Therapy room is a well designed space that is not too small and not too large with some, but not too many, creative modalities to choose from. This way children do not feel overwhelmed but are challenged to plan their expressive activity and work within the boundaries. Not only does Art Therapy improve cognitive functioning it practices fine and gross motor skills. Children can operate puppets, squish clay, draw with a fineliner pen or scrub charcoal. Art Therapy is purposeful play.
