In Australia, the month of December has the highest Su***de Rate. This month many people feel alone, overwhelmed, stressed, face financial difficulties, are grieving loved ones, stuck in abusive environments, struggling mentally and that’s not with adding Covid to the mix!

Sometimes everything hits you all at once. Your trying to juggle everything, do your best, try your hardest to fix things, and nothing seems to work! What you want isn’t reciprocated! You feel like you hit brick wall after brick wall, never being fully heard! You may lose a relationship, change jobs, old friends go and new ones come. It’s up one day and down the next. You have it all together on Monday and by Thursday you don’t have a clue.

Life is one big wave and all we can do is keep treading water!

It’s a sad reality that people living with a mental health issue will hear inappropriate comments, sometimes at a time when they are struggling the most.

These insensitive comments can leave people questioning themselves and their place in the world.

How do I know?
All these statements have been said to me at times I’ve been struggling. Did they help? No they didn’t, these statements actually made me worse!

Please be kind. Its not always easy to know what to say. If you know someone who is struggling approach with compassion and sensitivity. Maybe ask questions like:
“I’m worried about you, what’s going on”?
“How can I help you”?
“How can I support you”?
“Would you like to talk about it”?
“Have you thought about seeing your doctor”?
“I'm really sorry you're going through this. I'm here for you if you need me."

A lot of the time, simply being there for support and listening is really helpful and being mindful of the words you choose.

While your in the thick of overwhelming challenges and emotions, I find one of the best ways to stop the over thinking is to distract myself. Whether it’s doing something I love, being creative, cleaning the house, or even throwing myself into work, these are all my coping mechanisms. Once I’ve had enough time to do some processing, then I turn to journalling, meditation and asking myself the hard questions. How am I feeling? What have I learnt through this? How can I grow and move forward?

Sometimes professional help is the answer, maybe you need to speak with friends and family, but please, take your time, nurture yourself in the process and take care of you! You are worth it!!

We all have bad days! It’s inevitable, but it’s how you react and respond to the bad days that defines how long you will stay feeling flat and defeated!

Here are some of the things I try to concentrate and focus on when dats aren’t so great! I also try to look for the lesson in the situation and look for a positive. This can be challenging at times, but so worth it if you can stretch yourself to do that next step!
