Today is Safer Internet Day, a global day of action that raises awareness about online safety and encourages safer digital experiences for everyone.
Sadistic Online Exploitation (SOE) is a serious form of online abuse where someone deliberately manipulates, humiliates or coerces others for their own gratification or status.
SOE can start with someone pretending to be a friend or love interest, then slowly applying pressure or threats. It can involve sharing explicit content, encouraging self-harm, threats, or humiliation.
If you are concerned that a young person you know is being targeted for SOE it is important to take action.
You can report SOE to the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation or to your local state/territory police: https://www.accce.gov.au/report
Is your young person about to start high school? 🎒
The transition to secondary school is a big milestone. It's exciting, but it can also bring up some nerves and uncertainty, both for the young person and for you.
You might be wondering how to best support them through this change. Whether it's managing social interactions and new friendships, higher academic expectations, or simply adjusting to a different environment, there are practical ways you can help them feel more prepared and confident. 💚
Coping with the bushfire season can be difficult for you and your young person. Some people might experience disruptions in different areas of their lives.
Remember that there is no ‘right’ response and reactions can change over time. 💚

headspace Batemans Bay is a federally funded initiative being implemented by Coordinare, South Eastern NSW Primary Healthcare Network, in partnership with headspace National. Relationships Australia Canberra & Region, a not-for-profit service provider, has been awarded the role of lead agency to oversee the headspace service in Batemans Bay from late 2020. Following the wake of the 2019/20 Summer bushfires that impacted the wider Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven regions, the Batemans Bay headspace service was fast tracked to commence providing early intervention mental health services to young people aged 12 to 25 living in the Eurobodalla and Shoalhaven regions.
Referral is easy – young people can refer themselves by calling us on 1800 718 383 between the hours of 10am to 2pm Monday-Friday. Counselling appointments are available for booking Monday to Friday. If you are a family member, friend, or service provider and want to support a young person to get in touch with us, you can call us, complete and fax through our community referral form found online on our website or have a young person attend their local GP clinic to for referral (MHTPs are not required to access our services).
Due to Covid-19 physical distancing measures, headspace Batemans Bay currently only offers online and phone counselling services. Please stay tuned to our online accounts for updates including community engagement initiatives and the development of our centre establishment.
The headspace website also offers a wide range of national online services. Here, you can access lots of great mental health resources including group chats, online communities, interactive resources and 1:1 direct support with professionals. Watch this video to learn more about this, or visit headspace.org.au to create your own private account.
