I used to push myself a lot more physically, and always got a borderline 6.5-7 hours sleep.

But the sleep research of the last few years is undeniable.

Sleep is one of the most underrated longevity 'hacks' (that word bugs me!) with strong links to:

- good heart health
- delay or prevention of Alzheimer's
- reduction in inflammation and pain
- healthy immune function, and
- adaptive response to stress.

Good sleep helps the body run the way it should.

But I know, from the countless workshop attendees I speak to, that many people sleep less than 7 hours a night.

(🙋 Guilty? Let me know in the comments).

I'm going to be exploring sleep, the physiology of stress, and more in Stress Management 101 with the amazing team at Penske Australia & New Zealand today, delivering in partnership with Medibank - can't wait!

If someone ever tells you they can help you to 'banish cortisol' - run a mile!

Cortisol is not the bad guy, even if it has the reputation of a Hollywood villain in dark glasses 😎

You don't need to get rid of it for good.

In fact, cortisol, when released at the right time for the right reasons, can be exactly what your body needs.

The problem is when cortisol release, through the HPA Axis, is chronically over-activated.

Over time, this over-activation leads to chronic stress, increasing the risk of burnout.

The trick then, is to:
✔️ reduce stress triggers
✔️ learn strategies to manage stress, and
✔️ get the support you need to buffer against stressful events and recover well.

That's what I unpacked yesterday with the Department of Communities WA, delivering my 'Recharge and Reset' workshop in partnership with Medibank.

The ACORN Framework: 5 non-negotiables that will dramatically improve the way you live, work, and play 👇

A - Activity - dedicated exercise, incidental movement, focussing on strength, flexibility, and good HR variability.

C - Connection - a couple of good friends, positive relationships at work, community involvement, these all benefit your emotional and physical health.

O - Outlook - training your mind to be more self aware with mindfulness and focus on the positive with gratitude, awe, and perspective so you can reframe setbacks and stay focussed on the future.

R - Rest - getting enough sleep is one of the hardest for adults to do, but the pay-off is immediate and impactful, and beyond rest, making sure you get downtime and time out during the day is imperative.

N - Nourishment - eating the right foods to fuel your body and mind, to give you sustained energy throughout the day and the right setup to rest well at night.

Most people are doing one or two of these well, and neglecting one or two of them completely.

Which ones are they for you?

What does self-care even really mean?

'Self-care' either:

A. Gets a really bad rap in general, complete with eye rolls.

Or

B. Gets mixed up with massages and bubble baths.

(I love both of these, but self-care goes way beyond that!)

When we think of leaders practicing self-care, the message I want to get out there is that:

Self-care = sustainability

If you want to be effective, healthy, and lead well in the long-term, having a systematic, evidence-based self-care toolkit is essential.

What's in your self-care toolkit?

Absolutely loved today's session with sharing 'Empowering Leaders with Self-Care, in partnership with .

I get to see the world anew from my children's eyes.

What strikes me is the seesaw of feelings they have as they grow older and try to understand the life and world they're inheriting.

The beauty and the pain of life itself, so beautifully described as 'life is suffering' in Buddhism.

The way the world around us rises to make humanity thrive or crumble.

The overwhelming burden they have to learn their own emotions, and the carving out of their story in a world of instability and suffering....and how to find peace, joy and presence within that.

On World Mental Health day yesterday I reflected on how far we've come.

But also recognise the challenge we have ahead to help adults learn how to help themselves.

So they can, in turn, teach their own children how to adapt.

The work is going well. Better than before in many ways. And we are uniting across sectors to promote wellbeing and mental health.

But it's only the beginning.

And my small piece is to educate and empower the adults who can take on this challenge so we can hope for a longer, healthier and happier future for all.

And yes, the little things count. Because it all counts.

So if you're doing this work too - keep going.

Because what you do matters.

Most people don't realise that they're not breathing well and they don't experience the knock-on effect that can have on their wellbeing, relationships, and quality of life.

I had such amazing feedback from the team at The Perth Mint today when we unpacked the mechanics and practices of breathing to reduce stress.

If only more people had these tools in their back pockets to enable them to take action before stress gets out of hand.

With comments like 'superb' 'excellent' and 'life-changing', you know that these techniques have real impact.

Gratitude. Why is it important and what's the trick most people miss?

With our inbuilt negativity bias, we are wired to search for what is wrong.

Training our brains to look for what is right or good rewires our brain to be more optimistic and focused on what's good.

👇
The trick though, is that most people direct their gratitude towards grand and very over-arching concepts

--> I'm grateful for my family. I'm grateful for my health...etc.

These concepts are lovely, but over time they get repetitive - even boring! - and they're not specific enough for the brain to lay down new neural maps.

The next time you're practicing gratitude, be as specific as possible:

---> I'm grateful for the coffee and five minutes of peace my husband gave me this morning while he got the kids ready for school.

---> I'm grateful that my colleague organised that stakeholder meeting on my behalf, taking an admin task off my plate.

Find 3 x specific events per day for your gratitude practice and you'll be making a stronger and better impact on your sense of optimism in a short time 💥

🌟 Happy World Gratitude Day for Sunday 21 September 🌟

We want to do wellbeing right and go beyond tokenistic gestures.

So we understand that Awareness Days are essential, but they're just the start.

What leaders do, and what's embedded in teams the other 364 days is what matters most of all.

Here are 4 ideas that go beyond awareness days:

1. Start a check-in habit - one wellbeing question in every team meeting.

2. Audit workloads - look for hidden overtime and creeping expectations.

3. Model recovery - leave work on time every day and explain why you're doing it.

4. Educate and empower - give your teams and leaders tools to strengthen their wellbeing to be proactive, not reactive.

Awareness days open the door to conversation but embedding behaviour change keeps the door open and invites people to step through.

What are you doing to model the protection of your mental health this month?

Cupcakes and eye rolls....there's something about awareness days that really gets people in a knot.

People say that it's tokenistic to have cupcakes at work when there are deeper issues that are not addressed.

But awareness days are not there to single-handedly fix every systemic problem.

They're in place to raise awareness.

It's not an Either/Or situation.

It's an AND situation ++++

When wellbeing is done well, you:

1. Start the conversation (awareness days)
2. Keep the conversation going through the year (support & training your managers)
3. Keep people well and supported when they're not well (systems & policies)

I've worked with organisations that do this well, and you can see the benefits in the vibe of the people.

It shines from the conversations they have.

RU OK? Day fits in workplace wellbeing.

I hope your campaign sparks many important conversations throughout the year.
