How Long Does It Take to Get Used to CPAP?
(A guide from the mySleep team)

Starting CPAP therapy can feel like a big change, but you’re not alone. At mySleep, we’ve helped thousands of patients adjust to treatment and reclaim their sleep.

One of the most common questions we hear is: "How long does it take to get used to using CPAP?"

Most people adapt within 2 to 4 weeks, but the process looks a little different for everyone. Our team is here to support you every step of the way.

What to Expect in the First Few Weeks. In the early days, it’s completely normal to experience:
• A feeling of awkwardness with the mask
• Trouble falling asleep with air pressure
• Minor dryness or nasal congestion
• Taking the mask off during the night

These are all temporary and manageable and they do improve over time.

Week 1: Getting Comfortable
• Wear your mask during the day while reading or relaxing
• Practice breathing with the machine on before bedtime
• Focus on getting familiar, not perfect

Week 2–3: Building Routine
• Use your CPAP every night, even for part of the night
• Experiment with comfort settings (humidifier, ramp, mask fit)
• You may begin to notice better sleep quality and energy

Week 4: Settling In
• Most users feel the full benefit around this time
• You may feel more alert, refreshed, and less reliant on naps
• If you’re still uncomfortable, we’re here to help

Tips from the mySleep Team:
• Choose the right mask – Not every style suits every face. If it’s not comfortable, let us know—we’ll find a better fit.
• Use your humidifier – It helps reduce dryness and irritation.
• Try “ramp” mode – This eases you into therapy by starting with lower pressure.
• Keep your mask clean – A clean mask is more comfortable and hygienic.
• Stick with it – Even short use each night helps build the habit.

Remember: It’s an Adjustment, Not an Instant Fix. Just like getting used to glasses or new shoes, CPAP takes time. But with regular use, it becomes second nature and the health benefits are lifelong.

How do you know if you get quality sleep ?

Even if you get 8 hours a night, but still experience daytime tiredness, irritability, lack of focus or concentration, this may be a sign that your sleep quality may be compromised.

A sleep test is an accurate way to understand how you sleep at night, and to diagnose sleep disorders such as sleep apnea. mySleep offers home sleep studies where you take the equipment home and record your sleeping patterns whilst in the comfort of your own bed.

Check out our list of common daytime symptoms that could indicate you have sleep apnea on our website, where you can also download a GP referral to arrange a sleep test with us, Medicare Bulk Billing* available
