Patrick Wong Acupuncture Gentle Japanese Acupuncture

Practicing since 2002. Registered practitioner Acupuncture is a traditional medicine that has been around for thousands of years.

Originating in China, it developed a bit differently in Japan. More specifically, the style of acupuncture that I practice, Toyohari, was originally developed by blind practitioners. As you can imagine, blind people develop a very unique and heightened sense of touch. This lends itself perfectly to acupuncture as very subtle changes on the surface of the skin indicate areas that can be treated. How does acupuncture? In this type of medical model, it's believed that there are channels or meridians of energy (qi or ki) flowing through the body as well as body fluids like blood. When qi is deficient or not flowing correctly (or both) there is disease. In this context, the term "disease" is very broad and includes things like pain and reduced functionality as well as recognised diseases. The goal of acupuncture, then, is to balance the body's qi to optimise health. This, in turn, fights & wards off disease. So what can acupuncture treat? Well, many things from aches and pains (including sports injuries and arthritis) to fertility issues to metabolic disorders to childhood illnesses to a general feeling of unwellness and much more. I studied Traditional Chinese Medicine (acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine) at the University of Technology in Sydney - graduating in 2001. I then studied Toyohari in Sydney and Japan completing both extensive beginner and advanced courses. I have been practicing since 2002. Prior to this, I was a professional musician (double bass and electric bass). I played in many different types of musical ensembles including orchestras, big bands, small jazz groups and pop bands (such as Leonardo's Bride, Melissa Tallon, Michael Spiby).

This is interesting.

I am still seeing patients.

In light of the current situation with Covid-19, I would like to reassure my patients that I am making every effort to maintain the health and safety of my clinic.

I have hand sanitiser for you to use on arrival and departure. I encourage you to use it.

I will be scheduling patients’ appointments with 15 minutes gap in between so that social distancing advice is followed.

I have removed any toys and reading material from the waiting area for the time being.

If you have a cough or any cold or flu symptoms, I ask that you contact me prior to your appointment so that we can discuss them and act appropriately.

I wish you and your family good health.

FINDING BALANCE
It’s been a tough few months for our country - extremes in weather, extremes in emotion, extremes in hardship at a time when we normally celebrate family and look forward to a new beginning. This year, the feelings of loss are palpable.

In Chinese medicine, it’s thought that all things are made up of Qi and that illness / injury / disease comes from a deficiency of qi and / or a disruption to its flow. This happens on a planetary level as well.

It is also thought that periods of imbalance bring about new balance and, further, that there is connectivity between all things. We are all part of a greater whole - a greater being.

It’s difficult to understand what is happening at the moment or why it’s happening but it’s important to remember that no-one is truly alone or separate.

My thoughts are constantly with those in hardship at the moment. Hang in there. A new balance is coming. Look after each other.

I had a chat with ABC Newcastle radio journalist, Craig Hamilton, last week. It was aired last saturday 16/11/19.

He's doing a series on alternate medicine.

We chatted about the fundamentals of acupuncture and what to expect during an acupuncture treatment.

You can listen to it here:
