This is one of my favourite photos of my friend and I taken about 20 years ago! It totally captures the moment shared between us of pure, hysterical laughter! 😂👌🏽
Laughter - tears running down your face, your stomach aching, leaning into someone because you can’t hold yourself up…struggling to breathe because you’re laughing so hard…and sometimes that desperate leg-crossing when the situation calls for it! 😂
Finally the laughter subsides, you take a big breath and a long audible sigh. Your whole body feels spacious and soothed.
There’s a reason for that…
Did you know there is actually a field devoted to studying laughter called gelotology? Even the name is funny!
Here’s what we know;
• Laughter is scientifically proven to be contagious
• We’re up to 30x more likely to laugh with others
• It releases bonding chemicals
• It boosts heart function
• It lowers cortisol
• It calms the nervous system
• It shifts the body out of fight-or-flight
So it’s not “just fun”…
It’s regulation.
It’s connection.
In my Reiki room, it not uncommon for people to start laughing during a session. This happens when stagnant or deep-held emotional energy shifts. Sometimes with tears. Sometimes out of nowhere. It’s the body’s way of letting go and with the help of Reiki, promoting movement of the emotion and it’s release. In Chinese medicine, it’s known as stuck emotion beginning to move, especially grief held in the chest.
Laughter is actually one of the major signs of healing!
Laughter is also spiritual - take a look at the Laughing Buddha for example. In Buddhist and Taoist traditions, that laughter represents inner freedom, emotional ease, trust in life, and not gripping so tightly to how things “should” be. Being okay with imperfection. Letting life be a bit messy. And still finding joy in it!
So let’s find space for laughter! Find what and who makes us laugh and lean into it! It is such an important part of who we are, how we connect, how we heal, how we regulate and stay in good health, mentally, physically, and spiritually! 🤍
Laughter - it’s time to take it seriously!! 😜🤍
