Our Story
The Eating Psychologist was founded with the goal to help women free themselves from toxic eating and dieting culture and the negative body image merry-go-round that so many of us find ourselves on from a very young age. Whether we struggle with weight issues, binging, overeating or chronic dieting, or body hatred and self-loathing, one of the things I know for sure is that we ALL deserve to sit at the human table of life where we treat ourselves and others with dignity, grace and compassion. That these struggles that 99% of us have with our bodies come from the false idea we inherited that somehow we are less worthy based on our appearance and a number on a scale. And that these false ideas are what actually cause our eating, weight and body image struggles in the first place.
I want women to know that they don’t have to hate themselves or their bodies anymore. That there is a way to free ourselves from the misery, suffering and self loathing. That you can treat yourself with love, kindness, dignity and self- respect regardless of what shape or size body you are in.
I have personal understanding and lived experience in the realm of eating and body issues. I struggled with my weight during my teen years and throughout a lot of my adult life. I developed a fully fledged eating disorder as a young adult and again in my early 30s after having my second child. Everything was about being a certain weight and I didn’t care what I needed to do to get there... diets, diet pills, laxatives, starvation, hard, gruelling, punishing exercise, more diets... After nearly 30 years I felt fed up (pardon the pun) and decided there had to be a better way. The last few years have seen me embark on an epic journey into the psychology of eating, and mind-body nutrition in order to try and understand myself and my relationship with food and my body. This started to become more important to me than my weight as I realised that my body and I still had many more years together. The idea of living in a body that my mind constantly trashed became more and more unacceptable so I decided to make some changes, that have ultimately led to a far more compassionate, loving and even joyful relationship with food and my body. Whilst I am a Clinical Psychologist by profession, having spent many years working with a diversity of clients, I owe so much to the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, where I obtained certification as an Eating Psychology Coach a few years ago. Their work is groundbreaking and inspirational and was the missing piece I needed to help both myself and others. My approach combines Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic work, Interpersonal Therapy, Nutritional and Mind-Body Science, and the philosophical underpinnings of the Health at Every Size Movement (HAES), all deeply rooted in the frameworks of Self-Compassion and Mindfulness.
I also offer mentoring and coaching to other Health Practitioners who are interested in working in a more compassionate and evidence based way with clients who have eating, weight and body image issues.
