Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, with most cases due to smoking.

Symptoms of lung cancer may include:
👉 shortness of breath
👉 changes to the voice such as hoarseness
👉 chest pain
👉 coughing or spitting up blood
👉 a new cough that does not go away
👉 chest infection that lasts more than three weeks or keeps coming back
👉 enlarged fingertips
👉 loss of appetite
👉 unexplained weight loss
👉 tiredness.

If you have any of these symptoms, whether you smoke or not, please see your doctor.

The best thing you can do to reduce your risk of lung cancer is quitting smoking. 🚭

As soon as you quit, your body starts to heal. Then, after 10 years of quitting, your risk of lung cancer is halved. 🙌

If you or someone you know would like help to quit, call Quitline on 13 7848 for free support, or visit https://www.quithq.initiatives.qld.gov.au/

AMAZING MAGNESIUM!!!!
Do you have this "invisible deficiency"? 👀

Magnesium deficiencies are tough to spot (on paper) and are often overlooked in our health checkups.

Blood tests don’t provide an accurate measurement, as only 1% of our body’s Magnesium is actually stored in the blood 🩸— meaning a deficiency can go unnoticed.

Instead, it’s more effective to look out for and treat the signs of Magnesium deficiency (chances are, you may already be experiencing them!).

Here are some common symptoms:
😰 Anxiety
💤 Insomnia
⚡️ Low Energy
💪 Muscle cramps
🦴Osteoporosis

Magnesium is essential for a balanced mind and body. If any of these sound familiar, it's time to consider giving your body the magnesium boost it needs!

We all fall for something ... but let's not make it the edge of your carpet or that tool you should've put away long ago. 😅

As you age, your body changes. You might be more unsteady as you walk, have slower reflexes or your eyesight isn't as good as it used to be. 👓

This can increase your risk of falling over and ending up in hospital.

Falls can cause painful hip and wrist fractures or head injuries. You might also develop a fear of falling. This can make you feel less likely to stay active, which increases your falls risk even more. 😨

But don't be trippin'—there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of falling:
👉 remove trip hazards from around your home like rugs, floor mats, electrical cords
👉 use non-slip mats in wet zones like the bathroom and remove moss and slimy leaves from your outdoor paths
👉 keep active by exercising for 30 minutes a day. Daily exercise helps to improve balance, flexibility, strength and bone density. All of these things help you to prevent and bounce back from falls.

As the temperature rises across the state, look after yourself and others. ☀️

Severe heat and heatwaves, which are three or more days of high maximum temperatures, can be deadly. 🥵

To keep safe and cool, remember to:
💧 drink 2 to 3 litres of water a day at regular intervals
📱 check in on loved ones regularly (especially the elderly and pregnant women)
🏃 avoid heavy exercise during the hottest parts of the day
🌬️ seek air conditioning, or stay in a cool environment
😎 slip, slop, slap, seek and slide if you're spending time outside.

If you or anyone else shows signs of heat-related illness, call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) for advice, or visit your doctor. If it is an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

You don’t have to go through it alone.
✨ Speaking up can open doors to healing.
✨ Asking for help is brave, not weak.
✨ Support is out there and it can make a real difference.

If you or someone you know needs support, call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.

This haunting photo from 1950 shows children lying in iron lungs—massive machines that kept them alive when polio robbed them of the ability to breathe.

Polio was once one of the most feared diseases in the world, striking suddenly and leaving thousands paralyzed each year, mostly children. When the muscles that controlled breathing failed, patients were placed in these cylindrical respirators, sometimes for weeks, months, or even the rest of their lives.

The iron lung worked by creating negative pressure around the body, forcing the lungs to expand and contract. It was lifesaving—but it was also confining. Children could only move their heads, relying on nurses and caregivers for everything else.

Everything changed in the mid-1950s, when Jonas Salk’s polio vaccine was introduced. Within a generation, cases plummeted. By the 21st century, polio was eradicated from most of the world.

This photo is a sobering reminder of how far medicine has come—and what life was like before one of history’s most important vaccines
