Horsham - it’s been a harrowing and horrific couple of months. Whilst I don’t live there anymore it still ripples through. If anyone needs someone to chat to - I have people that I can set you up to chat with, also happy to chat to you myself.

Be the one that asks the question

Be that person

I will always ask the question that no one wants to ask, for fear of what the answer may be.

My first ever initiation into death was when one of my best friends su***ded when I was 17.

I remember everything. The last words she said. The gravel beneath my feet as I raced to my Dad when I found out. The guttural scream that escaped my throat as my world seemed to collapse.

It came out of the blue. Her death. She was there. And then she wasn’t.

Back then, I didn’t know the questions to ask. I didn’t know that su***de was even really a thing.

Today, it’s happening a lot.

9 per day in Australia.

63 per week.

63 “I’m sorry sir/mam, we have some horrible news”.

63 funerals.

Countless broken hearts.

“But we didn’t know”. And maybe we don’t. But maybe, just maybe sometimes we have an inkling things aren’t ok. That they’re going through a tough time that would stretch anyone’s capacity. And that’s what we act on. We don’t wait for the red flag. We need to act on that inkling and ask “do you have thoughts of ending your life?”

Asking this won’t encourage them to do so. It will be a simple yes or no answer and it may just be the thing that opens the door that is needed.

Don’t be scared to ask.

Be scared in not asking

Be scared in being left with a broken heart.
