This afternoon I joined Rhea Dempsey Birthing Wisdom hosted by Fertile Ground Health Group to examine contemporary birth culture and the impacts and implications on women and their families.
As a birth trauma Counsellor I hold space for women’s difficult birth experiences … Rhea’s introduction to what is now considered “Socially normal birth” gives context to the rise of medical interventions alongside a cascade of traumatic experiences for some mothers and babies.
Everytime I immerse myself in Rhea’s wisdom I come away with a depth of understanding that enriches my work. It was wonderful to share this space with naturopaths, osteopaths, midwives, child birth educators, maternal health nurses, birth attendants, birth debriefers, massage therapists, perinatal mental health workers … all of us coming together to gain insight into the complexities of contemporary birth, and knowledge to better support the women we work alongside.
