The importance of addressing the cause of pain rather than the symptoms.

Vladimir Janda's classification of muscle imbalances or commonly known as upper and lower crossed syndrome and their impact on movement patterns and pain is an important concept in the field of rehabilitation and musculoskeletal health. Janda's work emphasizes that these imbalances can lead to movement dysfunction and abnormal patterns.
It is noteworthy that muscles prone to tightness (such as the quads or pecs) generally have a lowered irritability threshold which means, they are easily activated during movement and can contribute to these imbalances in the body.

Furthermore, long term health concerns such as joint degeneration can result from these imbalances if left unaddressed, which is why it is important to address the root cause of pain and dysfunction there and then, rather then waiting for the damage to be done.

In such cases, it is also important as a therapist to aim to identify and treat the underlying issues leading to these imbalances rather than just addressing the symptoms or the source of the pain, which may be secondary to the muscular dysfunctions.

By focusing on the cause of the pain, you can aim to develop a more effective treatment strategy so you can restore proper muscle balance and movement patterns, ultimately improving the patient's overall function and reducing discomfort in the near future.

This is why having an individualised approach to the body is so important and should be addressed with appropriate soft tissue work, regular stretching and adequate strength training structured in a way that is of priority to you and your imbalances.

The importance of flexibility!
There are so many reasons for you to stretch!

Firstly, static stretching is to maintain a "specific joint relationship.” To put this simply, if the bones get drawn closer together than desirable, the impingement of connective tissue at the joint can cause all sorts of problems, especially nerve pinching. This can set off a range of neural activity that refers through all parts of the body.
Furthermore, if the bones are too close this can also lead to degeneration of the joint and its cartilage. By stretching and keeping the joints healthy, you can continue to train optimally and get through day to day life.

Secondly, it allows you to obtain joint angles in your strength exercises that will provide greater training effects (more strength at specific joint angles and higher amounts of hypertrophy).
In other words, allowing more room for error. ESPECIALLY in contact sports!

Thirdly, stretching supports and accelerates recovery. If you’re unsure about how these three points tie in with the benefits on flexibility, I recommend you integrate it into your everyday life. Be objective about you observations and see if you notice the benefit.
