Recognising the warning signs of a heart attack and acting fast could save your life or the life of someone close to you.

If you don't know all the warning signs of a heart attack, you're not alone. Many people don't recognise they are having a heart attack or know what to do.

Common warning signs include chest, arm, jaw, neck, back or shoulder pain or discomfort, and shortness of breath. Some people may feel sick, sweaty, dizzy or lightheaded, or have a feeling of indigestion or extreme fatigue. These lesser-known symptoms are particularly common in women.

A heart attack is a medical emergency. If you, or someone you know, is experiencing the warning signs of a heart attack, call Triple Zero (000) immediately and follow the operator's instructions.

Heart disease can occur 10 to 20 years earlier among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples compared with non-Indigenous Australians.

Reducing your risk of heart disease starts with knowing your risk factors and making changes to live a healthier life. To know your risk of heart disease, it's important to get a regular health check with your doctor or health service.

Book a Heart Health Check with your GP and discuss how you can reduce your risk.
