Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is one of the most effective ways to treat superficial skin cancers and sun-damaged skin - all performed here at Skin GP.

This light-activated treatment selectively destroys abnormal cells while leaving healthy skin untouched. It’s quick, minimally invasive, and requires little downtime, with follow-up care provided by our clinical team to ensure the best possible results.

Melanoma isn’t just a concern for older Australians.
It’s actually the most common cancer diagnosed in people aged 20 to 39, and rates continue to rise across the country.

Sun protection and regular skin checks remain the most effective ways to prevent and detect melanoma early.
Get to know your skin - and if you notice any new or changing spots, have them checked by your GP or skin cancer doctor.

Every skin cancer removal starts with one priority - complete excision of the cancer.
From there, our focus shifts to how that area heals, functions and looks.

Whether a closure is simple or requires advanced techniques like flaps or grafts, our goal is to restore both form and function with precision and care.

Practice Manager Spotlight – Jessica Collins

What inspired you to work in healthcare, and how did you find your way into skin cancer care?
I’ve always been drawn to roles that combine leadership with purpose. After years in healthcare management, I joined SkinGP to help build something meaningful from the ground up. Skin cancer care is a space where operational excellence directly impacts lives, and that’s a challenge I’m proud to take on.

What does a typical day as a Practice Manager at SkinGP look like?
No two days are the same! I oversee clinic operations, support our clinical and admin teams, manage patient experience, and ensure compliance with industry standards. From strategic planning to troubleshooting tech issues, I’m involved in every layer that keeps the clinic running smoothly.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in practice management?
Learn to lead with empathy and clarity. Understand your team’s strengths, communicate openly, and always keep patient care at the heart of your decisions. Also—never underestimate the power of good systems and a well-thought-out processes and workflows!

What’s your proudest achievement at SkinGP so far?
Completing AGPAL accreditation and coordinating/ hosting the Melanoma March 2025 within our first year of opening was a huge milestone! We had just over 100 people attend the Melanoma March this year and raised just over $7,000 for the Melanoma Institute Australia. This was a truly a team effort, and I feel very blessed to be part of such a wonderful team that is so passionate about their jobs and know the importance their roles have in our patient’s lives and health journeys.

How do you support your team’s growth and wellbeing?
I focus on creating a culture of support and accountability. Whether it’s professional development opportunities, clear workflows, or just being available to listen—I want every team member to feel valued and empowered.

What’s your favourite part of working in skin cancer care?
Knowing that early detection can save lives. Every efficient process, every well-managed appointment, contributes to that outcome. It’s rewarding to know our work has real impact.

What’s something people might not know about your role?
It’s equal parts strategy and service. I’m working on business plans one moment and helping a patient navigate a referral the next. It’s a dynamic role that requires both big-picture thinking, attention to detail and problem solving all at once.

What’s your favourite way to recharge after a busy day at the clinic?
Spending time with family and friends. Riding my horses and keeping up with my children’s extracurricular activities also keep me busy. I also genuinely enjoy staying up to date with the latest in healthcare by reading industry publications and tuning into podcasts that explore current trends, innovations, and best practices. I really love what I do.

Surgical procedures remain the most effective treatment for many types of skin cancer, offering the highest cure rates and faster healing compared to non-surgical methods.

At Skin GP, our doctors perform these procedures in-clinic under local anaesthetic, treating everything from small, straightforward lesions to more complex cancers.

Every operation is guided by three priorities: complete removal of the cancer, preserving function in the affected area, and minimising scarring for the best possible outcome.

This week (16th - 22nd November) is National Skin Cancer Action Week, an initiative by Cancer Council Australia in combating Australia’s ‘national cancer’.

Fortunately, skin cancer is almost entirely preventable. An easy way to ensure you’re protecting your skin from UV exposure is by making sun protection a daily habit.

No matter your age, you can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer by using all five forms of sun protection when the UV level is 3 or above:

👕 Slip on sun protective clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
🧴Slop on SPF50 or SPF50+, broad-spectrum, and water-resistant sunscreen. Apply it 20 minutes before going outdoors and re-apply every two hours afterwards.
🤠 Slap on a hat—broad brim or legionnaire style to protect your face, head, neck and ears.
⛱️ Seek shade.
😎 Slide on sunglasses—make sure they meet Australian Standards.
