CyclePort

CyclePort CyclePort creates the Internet of Bikes. Lock, charge, share. Any bike. Everywhere. Our universal bike parking and sharing technology creates an Internet of Bikes.

CyclePort is a tech start up with global applications in smart, micro transport systems. Any bike fitted with CyclePort’s universal connector can dock in our proprietary ports. Ports instantly lock all bikes; detect and charge electric bikes; and facilitate bike rental or sharing with smart control. High density parking stations are created by connecting ports in series. Stations connect wirelessly to form automated, intelligent parking networks, remotely controlled and potentially solar powered. CyclePort addresses several emerging markets:

1. Universal bike sharing:
CyclePort promotes the sharing of all bikes - private and public, push and electric - in an open market, so it will be a key player in the emerging peer-to-peer economy, like Uber for cars and Air BnB for accommodation. The value of the global bike share market is projected at US$6 billion by 2020.

2. Smart bike parking:
In contrast to 'dumb' bike racks, Cycleports talk to bikes: reading their unique IDs; instantly locking them; extracting data from on board sensors; and charging on board batteries to the correct voltage.

3. Green vehicle fleets:
Switching from expensive fleet cars to an intelligent, automated fleet of pushbikes and electric bikes saves up to $10,000 per vehicle per year, cuts greenhouse emissions and improves the health of users.

4. Intelligent transport integration:
With CyclePort, bikes can be carried on public transport and integrated into smart journey planning and ticketing systems. The Intelligent Transport Systems market will be worth US$34 billon by 2020.

5. Cycle tourism:
CyclePort’s automated bike rental stations can operate all hours and anywhere, e.g. at tourist attractions, visitor information centres, transport nodes, nature parks and hotels.

6. Electric bike charging:
E-bikes are the fastest growing transport mode in the world: 30 million e-bikes were sold last year in China alone, and by 2023, every third bike sold in Europe will be an e-bike. But before CyclePort, no universal public charging system existed to cater for this growth.

Being based in regional Victoria it's good to see new country trains being built, but completely removing already limited bike parking space is ridiculous and retrograde.

Our transport systems need to integrate different modes, in particular encouraging walking and cycling to cover the first and last mile (or five) of each trip.

Public Transport Victoria Bicycle Network

Regional commuters will get more seats on the new and revamped Vlocity trains, but the extra seats will replace a toilet, and space to park your bicycle and luggage.

Well this is not news to us, but it's good to see cycling getting the headlines it deserves (although that should read 'IPCC').

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has today issued a hard-hitting report on the impact of global warming. One of the mitigating "pathways" is to walk and cycle more.

Removing VAT from bicycle sales will help drive sustainable mobility in the EU (although it's a shame they didn't include electric bikes and scooters). Australia should take heed.

A truly progressive incentive scheme would reward or penalise different transport modes according to their overall societal burden, including emissions, congestion, deaths and injuries, and cost of supporting public infrastructure. Pushbikes, e-bikes, e-scooters and other light electric vehicles would then take their rightful place at the top.

The EU, in its ever-increasing push towards sustainability, is considering reducing or removing value added tax (VAT) on bicycles. However, many are upset that electric bicycles are not included in…

Yes, e-scooters probably can help solve the ‘last mile’ transport problem. But we also think they will suffer the same fate as dockless share bikes unless cities get wise.

Specifically, cities need to invest in smart universal dock and charge stations to control the parking of share bikes and scooters to avoid messy clutter, dumping, theft and vandalism.

At CyclePort we're devising these solutions. Cities, partners, investors, we're ready to talk.

Shared electric scooters appeal as a way to cover that awkward distance between public transport stops and your destination. But first e-scooter operators must solve the littering and dumping problem.

"Since 2017, VC investors have poured US$6.3 billion into bike-rental and scooter-rental startups".

This article highlights the potential of light personal transport to transform urban mobility. But it doesn't offer any solutions to the tension between cities and mobility start-ups around the uncontrolled use of public space.

Here's our solution:
Cities should recognise bike and scooter sharing as congestion-busting public transport, and provide supporting infrastructure just as they do for trains, buses, trams, etc.
The missing infrastructure piece is universal docking stations that control share bike and scooter parking in busy urban centres and transport nodes. These stations should automatically dock, lock and charge all models.
CyclePort has been researching and developing this solution for 4 years and we are about to commence pilots in Melbourne, Sydney and Newcastle.

We are raising investment, so please get in touch if you wish to part of the urban mobility revolution.

In recent months, an ever-growing crop of startups centered on personal mobility have raised billions from venture capitalists. But the bike and scooter crazes haven't been without controversy.
