Graduated exposure in ASD 💡

In Exercise Physiology and Physiotherapy, we often use graduated exposure when working with individuals on the autism spectrum.

This means starting small, building trust, and slowly increasing tolerance to movement, environments, and tasks over time.

Progress doesn’t always look like big changes 👇
Sometimes it’s:
✔ Attending the session
✔ Engaging for a few extra minutes
✔ Repeating a familiar activity

And that’s okay.

Consistency is key.

Research shows that regular exercise interventions can improve motor skills, social interaction, behaviour, and overall quality of life in individuals with ASD

Over time, what once felt unfamiliar becomes:
➡ predictable
➡ safe
➡ routine

And that’s when progress starts to accelerate.

At RPM Allied Health, we focus on meeting clients where they’re at — and building from there.

🧠 Exercise & Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 38 studies involving 2,219 adults living with acquired brain injury (including stroke and TBI).

The findings showed that structured exercise programs significantly improved:

• Walking endurance
• Gait speed
• Balance
• Physical quality of life
• Mental wellbeing

The strongest evidence was for improvements in walking endurance and gait speed.

Programs that were structured, supervised and continued long-term showed the most consistent benefits. Interestingly, shorter sessions (around 30 minutes) were often associated with better gait outcomes than longer sessions — possibly due to fatigue management.

The review concluded that exercise should be considered a fundamental component of rehabilitation for people with ABI.
