Akkermansia is one of those gut bacteria that can tell us a lot.

I often pay close attention to Akkermansia muciniphila on gut microbiome testing because it plays such an important role in protecting the gut lining.

It helps maintain the mucus layer that lines the gut wall — which is one of the body’s key protective barriers.

When levels are low, we can often see a pattern of:

• gut lining irritation
• increased permeability (leaky gut)
• inflammation
• poor metabolic balance
• digestive symptoms that don’t fully settle

Low levels are quite common after antibiotics, long-term stress, poor diet variety, or ongoing gut disruption.

What’s interesting is that many people can have low Akkermansia without knowing it — symptoms alone won’t tell you.

That’s where gut testing can be really useful, because it shows whether important species like this are missing or depleted, rather than just guessing what the gut needs.

Sometimes improving gut health is less about adding more supplements, and more about understanding what’s actually happening in the microbiome first 🔬🌿

Feeling pretty chuffed this week — so many patient wins! 🌟

~ One patient with complex motor tics reported 60–70% improvement in just 4 weeks, with complete resolution of muscular pain.
~ Another following the G.E.M.M. protocol has no more tearing gut sensations when eating — such a relief!
~ Wonderful results in the Leaner Me program, with women releasing weight and perfectly maintaining their new healthy weight.

I also had the joy of presenting two workshops this week (with another one this afternoon!) and worked with 35 amazing clients — what an incredible week of health improvements and wins. 💛

Feeling so grateful to support these transformations!

If you said YES ---- BUT.... good news!
One of the key molecules responsible for gut and immune health is 2'-FL (2'-Fucosyllactose) - naturally found in breast milk - is now available in a safe, dairy-derived form for adults.

Here’s what makes 2'-FL so remarkable:

🔹 Modulates the microbiome to increase SCFA production and boost Bifidobacterium populations.
🔹 Strengthens gut lining integrity by enhancing tight junction expression.
🔹 Supports balanced immune responses across pro- and anti-inflammatory pathways.
🔹 Encourages regulatory T cell development, helping improve resilience in allergic reactions.
🔹 Supports neurodevelopment and the gut-brain axis, linking digestive health to mood and cognition.

This isn’t just another supplement — it works at the foundation level of gut health, helping your system repair, balance, and thrive.

Available under professional consultation to ensure it’s tailored to your gut and immune needs.

💚 If your gut has been struggling and conventional approaches aren’t enough, this could be the step that finally makes a difference.

GLP‑1 medications can help you shed kilos — but long-term success comes from metabolic mastery.

🚫 What derails lasting results:

All-day fasting then night-time binging: Rapid fat loss at the expense of muscle slows metabolism.

Low protein intake: Muscle loss reduces your metabolic engine.

Ignoring metabolic flexibility: If your body can’t efficiently switch between burning carbs and fat, fat regain is inevitable.

Unaddressed toxicity, thyroid, and immune issues: Environmental toxins, thyroid dysfunction, or chronic inflammation can sabotage fat-burning, energy, and hormonal balance.

✅ The framework for metabolic mastery & lasting weight loss:

Build metabolic flexibility: Teach your body to efficiently switch between burning carbs and fat with smart meal timing and macronutrient balance.

Prioritise protein and strength training: Preserve lean mass and protect your metabolism.

Support thyroid and immune health: Check labs, address deficiencies, reduce inflammation, and minimise toxic load.

Optimise diet strategy: Nutrient-dense meals, strategic carbs and fats, and personalised approaches are more powerful than extreme restriction.

Recovery & sleep: Your metabolism and hormones need rest to function optimally.

📊 The evidence:

The Biggest Loser contestants lost massive weight quickly — but years later, many had resting metabolisms 500–800 calories lower than expected, largely due to muscle loss, extreme dieting, and metabolic adaptation.

Rapid GLP‑1-driven weight loss without building metabolic flexibility often results in fat regain and slowed metabolism.

💡 Takeaway: GLP‑1s can jumpstart weight loss, but lasting results come from preserving muscle, restoring metabolic flexibility, addressing thyroid and immune function, reducing toxicity, and eating strategically.

Clinical studies consistently show that berberine, a natural plant compound, performs on par — and sometimes better — than metformin in key metabolic outcomes.

📈 Highlights from research:

1. Fasting blood glucose: Berberine matches metformin in lowering levels.

2. HbA1c reduction: Comparable reductions observed in multiple randomized controlled trials.

3. Lipid profile improvements: Berberine lowers triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, often exceeding metformin’s effect.

4. Insulin sensitivity: Significant improvements, helping combat insulin resistance at the cellular level.

⚡ Mechanism: Berberine activates AMPK, the body’s metabolic master switch, regulating glucose uptake, lipid metabolism, and energy balance — the same pathway targeted by metformin.

✅ Clinical take-home: Berberine is not a gimmick. It is a rigorously studied, natural compound with compelling evidence for supporting blood sugar and metabolic health.

⚠️ Professional note: Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting berberine, particularly if already taking prescription medications. A 2010 study looked at 20,000+ animals from 8 species living in industrialised environments — and guess what? Many are getting heavier too.

This isn’t just about calories or exercise. Our modern world — with its processed foods, stress, light at night, and chemical exposures — is rewiring metabolism in ways we’re only starting to understand.

Chimpanzees showed up to ~37% more weight per decade and 11–18× higher odds of obesity, lab mice gained ~10–12% per decade, and even pet cats saw ~14% weight increases over time!

The smarter approach? Support your body, work with your biology, and don’t fall for “eat less, move more” oversimplifications.

This week I attended an incredible practitioner seminar on the future of GLP-1 meds and weight loss — and it reinforced something really important…

👉 Weight and metabolic health are influenced by far more than just appetite suppression.

Your metabolism is shaped by many interconnected factors:
• Insulin and blood sugar balance
• Muscle mass (your metabolic engine)
• Hormones like leptin and cortisol
• Sleep and circadian rhythm
• Gut microbiome health
• Protein intake and nutrient levels
• When you eat, not just what you eat

One fascinating point discussed was that GLP-1 medications may lead to significant muscle loss during weight reduction if nutrition and resistance training aren’t addressed properly.

That’s where a holistic naturopathic approach becomes incredibly important.

Rather than focusing on just one pathway, we look at the whole metabolic picture and support things like:

🌿 Blood sugar regulation
🌿 Muscle maintenance and protein intake
🌿 Hormone balance
🌿 Gut health
🌿 Nutrient deficiencies
🌿 Sustainable nutrition strategies

For some people, naturopathic care may also support the body alongside GLP-1 medications to help protect muscle, improve metabolic health, and create long-term results.

Because lasting weight loss isn’t just about eating less — it’s about helping the body work better metabolically.

If you’re:
• struggling with stubborn weight
• dealing with sugar cravings or “food noise”
• considering GLP-1 medications
• already taking them and want to support your body properly
• navigating hormonal weight gain

I’d love to help you create a personalised metabolic health plan. Book a consult via my website or send me a message.

Your metabolism is complex — and that’s exactly why it deserves a personalised approach. 🌿
