There are so many points that Pam Snow makes in this post that I love. A great read for teachers and parents.

Every so often I have the pleasure of giving voice to reading practitioners via The Snow Report. This time, it is US reading specialist Harriet Janetos.

Fun fact - speech pathologists also assess, diagnose, treat and manage people with swallowing difficulties ☺️

What’s this thing called Dysphagia?
Dysphagia (dis-fay-juh) is difficulty swallowing, and today (16 March) is Swallowing Awareness Day. The theme for the day in 2023 is, “Dysphagia: A difficult diagnosis to swallow”.
People who have trouble swallowing are at risk of choking, poor nutrition and dehydration, while babies and children with difficulty feeding my not take in enough nutrients to support growth and brain development.
Speech pathologists are the professionals who assess and treat swallowing disorders. Everyday speech pathologists work with families and individuals across the lifespan to ease the burden of dysphagia.
On Swallowing Awareness Day, 16 March, help us spread the word about dysphagia. We have a range of materials to learn more about dysphagia.

Have you ever wondered why writing can be so tricky for some students?

Writing is a complex task that requires a multitude of skills. The 5 strands need to be explicitly taught and weave together, as all skills are needed to produce quality pieces of written text. Swipe across to find out more about each of the five strands.

My go to resources to support the development of these skills are
⭐️ The Writing Revolution - Judith Hochman & Natalie Wexler
⭐️ Writing Matters - William Van Cleave
⭐️ The Syntax Project - available for free online
⭐️ Bringing Words to Life: Robust Vocabulary Instruction - Isabel Beck, Linda Kucan & Margaret McKeown

I still have some times available for those who are looking for speech or literacy support for their child.

I have completed training in the Sounds-Write Course. Sounds-Write teaches reading and spelling using carefully structured, sequential steps from simple words like ‘sat’ to more complex, words like ‘personification’.

This program is evidence-based and is recommended by the Dyslexia SPELD Foundation as a highly structured program.
