AGNUS CASTUS.

Verbena verticillata. Vitex agnus castus (Linn.). The Chaste Tree. (Shores of Mediterranean, Provence, and Greece.) N. O. Verbenaceæ. Tincture of ripe berries.
Clinical
Agalactia. A**s, excoriation and chaps of. Ascites. Dislocations, Gonorrhœa, secondary. Gouty joints. Gums, ulcerated. Impotence. Knees, coldness of. Leucorrhœa. Mouth, ulcers in. Rheumatic nodes. Spleen, swelling of; induration of. Sprains. Sterility. Testicles, swelling of; induration of. Toothache.

Characteristics
As its name implies, Agnus Castus produces its chief effects in the sexual sphere, causing depression of function. General debility and depression of vital power are marked. There ire very characteristic symptoms in the mental sphere. Great sadness with a fixed idea of approaching death. This fear is not of immediate death as with Aconite, but the patient thinks it is sure to come after a while, and there is no use in doing anything. When this mental state is found after confinement and the milk fails to appear, Agn. c. is the remedy. Absent-mindedness. Drowsiness. It corresponds to lymphatic constitutions. Premature old age, with apathy and melancholy, self-contempt from sexual abuse. Nervous debility in unmarried persons. Impotence and gleet in old offenders. Among other peculiar symptoms are: Illusion of smell as of herrings; or musk; ulcers in mouth and on gums. Tearing pain in lower jaw. Toothache from hot food or drink. Swelling and induration of spleen. Rumbling of flatus during sleep. Discharge of prostatic fluid whilst straining at stool. Suppressed me**es with abdominal pain. Leucorrhœa staining yellow. Sterility. Deficiency of milk, with despair of recovery. Pain as if dislocated in joints. Joints easily twisted. Rheumatic and gouty nodosities on joints.

Relations
Agnus is the only proved member of the Verbena family, though the Labiatæ or Mint family are closely allied. It is antidoted by: Camphor, Nat. mur. (headache); strong solutions of table-salt. It is followed well by: Ars., Bry., Ign., Lyc., Pul., Sul., Selen. Compare: (Leucorrhœa staining yellow), Nux, Chel., Carb. an., Kreas. Teste groups it with Mur. ac. and Hyo.

Causation
Sexual excesses. Repeated attacks of gonorrhœa or gleet. Sprains or over-lifting.

1. Mind
Extreme absence of mind; unable to recollect things; finds it difficult to read or keep up the train of thought.─Despairing sadness; low-spirited; fears of death; keeps repeating that she will soon die.

2. Head
Tearing pain, with pressure in the temples and forehead (in the brain); < during motion.─Pain in the temple, as from a blow.─Heaviness in the head, and pressure, as if the head would fall forward.─Pain in the vertex, as from staying in a room filled with a thick and smoky atmosphere.─Tension and chilliness in the scalp, which is warm to the touch.

3. Eyes
Corrosive itching or gnawing itching over and on the eyebrows, on the eyelids and under the eyes; > by scratching, but it soon returns.─Dilated pupils (and photophobia).

4. Ears
Roaring in the ears.─Hardness of hearing.

5. Nose
Odour before the nose, like herrings or musk.─Hard, aching pressure on the dorsum of the nose; > by pressure.

6. Face
Corrosive itching of the cheeks, under the eyes, and on the chin.─Formication in the cheeks.─Rending, tearing pain under the alveoli of the r. lower jaw.

8. Mouth
Ulcers in the mouth and on the gums.─The teeth are painful when touched by warm food or drink.

10. Appetite and Taste
Thirstlessness and aversion to drink.─Metallic, coppery taste.

11. Stomach
Nausea in pit of stomach when standing; later in the abdomen, with a sensation as if the intestines were pressing downwards; constant inclination to support bowels with the hands.

12. Abdomen
Abdomen sore to touch.─Swelling and induration of the spleen, esp. after intermittent fevers.─Ascites.─Rumbling of flatulence during sleep.─Fear as if entrails were sinking down; constantly wants to support bowels with hands.

13. Stool and A**s
Difficulty of passing soft stools.─When pressing at stool, discharge of prostatic fluid.─Sensation as of subcutaneous ulceration near the a**s, only when walking.─Corrosive itching of the perineum.─Rhagades at the a**s.─Deep fissures of the a**s, often giving pain when walking.

14. Urinary Organs
Frequent micturition.

15. Male Sexual Organs
Diminution of sexual power.─The p***s is small and flaccid; so relaxed that voluptuous fancies excite no erection.─Feeble erections without sexual desire.─The testicles are cold, swollen, hard, and painful.─Impotence, with gleet (esp. with those who have frequently had gonorrhœa).─Gleet, without sexual desire or erections.─Emission of prostatic fluid when straining at stool; during micturition.─Drawing along the spermatic cords.─Pollutions from irritable weakness with prostatorrhœa.─Itching of the ge***al organs.─Yellow discharges from the urethra.─Gonorrhœa, with suppressed sexual desire.

16. Female Sexual Organs
Transparent leucorrhœa; parts very relaxed.─Leucorrhœa spotting linen yellow.─Sterility, with suppressed me**es, and want of sexual desire.─Milk scanty or entirely suppressed.─Deficient, secretion of milk in lying-in women.─Swelling and inflammation of the uterus.─Retained placenta.

18. Chest
Hard pressure in the region of the sternum, esp. during a deep inspiration.─Cough in the evening in bed, before going to sleep.

22. Upper Limbs
Hard pressure in right axilla and upper arm; worse from touch and motion.─Swelling of the finger joints, with arthritic, tearing pains.

23. Lower Limbs
Lancinating pain in the right hip-joint.─Heaviness of right foot, as from a weight.─Stitches in the legs (left big toes).─Tearing pain in joints of toes; worse when walking.

24. Generalities
Great debility.─Inflammatory, rheumatic swelling of the joints.─Gouty nodosities.─Sprains, bad results from lifting too much.─Feet turn under when walking.

25. Skin
Corrosive itching on different parts of the body, > by scratching, but it soon returns.─Itching around the ulcers, in the evening.

27. Fever
Pulse small, slow, imperceptible.─Chilliness, internal with trembling, the external skin is warm.─Much chilliness, with cold hands.─Flushes of burning heat, principally in the face, with cold knees in the evening in bed.─Perspiration almost only on the hands, when walking in the open air.

Principles

What is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of natural medicine introduced and developed by a German physician, Samuel Hahnemann, at the end of the 18th century. Recognizing that the whole person-mind, body, spirit-is affected when there is illness, homeopathy seeks to treat that whole person. The focus is not the diseased part or the sickness, rather the totality of the individual. Homeopathic medicines, or 'remedies', stimulate the body's self-regulating mechanisms to initiate the healing process.

Homeopathic Philosophy

When a person becomes ill, it is the whole that is sick: body, mind, spirit. The body manifests symptoms of illness but it is not the origin of the illness. Upon death, the physical body remains, but it is no longer curable. That which is curable, the 'vital force', has left the body. The origin of illness lies in an imbalance of the vital force. The symptoms expressed by the body, mind, and spirit are the manifestation of that imbalance. By matching the symptoms of illness with the appropriate homeopathic remedy, the vital force returns to balance. The symptoms disappear as the person heals themselves.

Homeopathic Principles

Homeopathy has 7 principles that are its foundation. They remain unchanged over the last 200 years as their truth is demonstrated through successful treatment of the sick.

1. Law of Similia (Similia Similibus Curentur)

Hahnemann formulated this law and is the outcome of his experiments which begin with Cinchona bark and later extended to experiments (provings) of other medicinal substances.

Similia similibus curentur states that any drug which is capable of producing symptoms of disease in the healthy human being, will remove similar symptoms and thus cure the disease when found in the sick.

By its application the curative remedy can be found in curable cases.

This law is based on inductive method of reasoning, Hahnemann & his followers established this law by scientific observation and interpretation of known facts

This law establishes definite relationship between the medicine & the disease

Hahnemann mentioned this law in 1796, in an essay- “On the new principle for ascertaining the curative properties of drugs” which was published in Hufeland's journal.

2 The law of simplex (Single remedy at a time)

Single remedy is the necessary corollary of the similar remedy. Law of simplex means the remedy should be administered in a simple form not as a mixture.

Only one remedy can be exactly similar at given time so it has to be given alone, not alternated or mixed with any other; only then its curative (pure) effects can be observed.

Any single substance that has been proved upon the healthy, as an entity and whose effects (pathogenesis) is known, can be administered; but it must be given unmixed with any other medicinal substance.

If a mixture of medicines is given to a sick patient, the result can't be assessed properly to know which medicine among the mixture (combination) has acted. Each drug is proved separately in drug-proving, mixture of drugs (polypharmacy) can't help to know the curative action of each drug & the follow-up of the case will be messed up.

3 The law of minimum: (Minutest dose of the medicine)

The single remedy must be given to a patient in smallest possible that will bring the desired reaction.

This law can be explained based on Law of Least action proposed by Maupertius a French Mathematician which states that: “The quantity of action necessary to effect any change in nature is the least possible; the decisive amount is always a minimum, an infinitismal.

In Homeopathy disease is considered as dynamic affection of vital force, due to causative agents which are dynamic in nature, so the required remedy should be given in dynamic doses or infinitesimal doses to stimulate the dynamic vital force to overcome the dynamic affection (disease) and effect cure.

Disadvantages of crude doses or multiple doses: they can cause only the physiological changes, the internal affection of vital force (disease per se) remains uncured, and sometimes they can cause adverse effects. Eg- giving medicines in tinctures, extracts, compounds etc.

Disadvantages of repeated administration of medicines: Sometimes either due to patient's request or due to physician's ignorance if repetition of remedy is done in haste, i.e., before the completion of action of first dose of the indicated medicine, it will prevent any good effect produced so far. The general rule is as long as the patient is improving one should not repeat the remedy.

Prolonged use of medicines in crude & physiological doses can add symptoms due to the action of drugs (drug disease)

4 Doctrine of drug proving:

It means the homoeopathic method of experimentation of drugs on the healthy human beings to know their effects of altering health.

This is the only scientific & rational method of ascertaining the action of medicines that is by administering the drugs on healthy human beings as experiments on animals can't give subjective symptoms (Intellectual faculty is less developed in animals compared to humans).

It was first advocated by Albert von Haller, a Swiss Physician and Hahnemann was the first person to conduct experiments on himself & others to know the pure effects of the drugs & further rationally applied in practice.

5 Theory of Chronic Diseases:

Hahnemann classified diseases as Indispositions, Surgical disease & remaining he classified as chronic diseases.

Theory of chronic diseases was first introduced in 1829, in 4th edition of organon.

Hahnemann observed that inspite of proper administration of homeopathic medicines the patients had recurrence of symptoms, he investigated for 12 years and finally concluded that Miasms as the real cause of all chronic diseases.

Miasm in simple terms is a predisposition to certain disease conditions, or dynamic disease causing powers.

Psora, sycosis & syphilis are the 3 miasms named by Hahnemann, Psora is considered to be the mother of all miasms as it forms the basic foundation to other miasmatic sufferings

Hahnemann classified medicines under the heading of these 3 miasms as anti-psoric, anti-sycotic & anti-syphilitic remedies to simplify treatment of chronic diseases.

Though Hahnemann's theory of Miasms is not proven, it is a most admirable working theory, a stepping stone by means of which we attain remarkable results in the treatments of disease.

6 Theory of Vital force:

This doctrine was introduced in the 5th edition of Organon.

According to this theory the disease is due to derangement of dynamic vital force by dynamic disease.

In aph-9th Hahnemann defines vital force as the force which animates the material body and runs its all functions in a harmonious way. It is the force which gives life to the material body, its malfunctioning cause's disease expressed as altered sensations & symptoms and its absence results death & decay.

The term Vital force is replaced by Vital Principle in 6th edition of Organon of medicine

So cure consists correcting dynamically disordered vital force by the administration of suitable homoeopathic remedies of dynamic nature.

7 The doctrine of Drug dynamization ( Aph-264-271)

Introduced in 5th edition of Organon along with the doctrine of Vital force.

This is a process by which the inherent curative or medicinal properties of crude substances are brought out.

Hahnemann in his book on ‘chronic diseases' quotes: “ Homeopathic dynamizations are processes by which the medicinal properties, which are latent in natural substances while in their crude state, become aroused, and then become enabled to act in an almost spiritual manner on our life.

Inert substances like, Sand (Silicia), Table salt (Nat.mur), Club moss (Lycopodium) are made highly effective remedies by the process of potentization.

Drug dynamization mainly consists of process of succusion in fluid substances and trituration in dry substances.

The preparations obtained after advanced processes of dynamization are called potencies
