3M ESPE Adper Single Bond Universal Adhesive is a light-cured, single-component dental adhesive designed for use in both direct and indirect restorative procedures. It offers universal compatibility with different etching techniques—self-etch, total-etch, and selective-etch—allowing clinicians flexibility and convenience in clinical protocols.
This adhesive bonds effectively to a wide range of dental substrates, including enamel, dentin, composites, zirconia, glass ceramics, metals, and amalgam, eliminating the need for multiple bonding agents or primers.
Its innovative formulation includes MDP monomer and silane, enabling strong chemical bonding and long-term durability. Additionally, the presence of Vitrebond copolymer enhances its performance under moist conditions and minimizes post-operative sensitivity.
🔑 Key Highlights:
Universal use in all etching modes
Bonds to virtually all dental materials
Single-step, one-coat application
Excellent marginal seal and bond strength
Moisture-tolerant and reduces sensitivity
No refrigeration required
This adhesive is especially suited for dentists who want a fast, reliable, and versatile bonding agent for most restorative cases with minimal technique sensitivity.
How to Use 3M ESPE Adper Single Bond Universal Adhesive
You can use this adhesive with self-etch, total-etch, or selective-etch techniques. Below is the general step-by-step guide for all modes:
🔹 1. Tooth Preparation
Clean the tooth surface.
Remove caries and shape the cavity as needed.
Rinse and gently dry the tooth (avoid over-drying if bonding to dentin).
🔹 2. Etching (optional based on technique)
Technique What to do
Total-etch Etch both enamel and dentin with phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. Rinse and gently air dry.
Self-etch No separate etching needed. Skip this step.
Selective-etch Etch only enamel with phosphoric acid for 15 seconds. Rinse and dry. Dentin is untouched.
🔹 3. Adhesive Application
Dispense: Shake the bottle well. Dispense a few drops into a clean mixing well.
Apply: Using a disposable applicator, scrub the adhesive onto the entire tooth surface for at least 20 seconds.
Air Dry: Gently air-blow for 5 seconds to evaporate solvent and create a thin, uniform film. Do not over-dry.
Light Cure: Cure with a dental curing light for 10 seconds.
🔹 4. Restoration Placement
Proceed with placing your composite, compomer, or indirect restoration as required.
⚠️ Tips for Best Results
Keep the bottle tightly sealed when not in use.
Do not touch the tip of the bottle to avoid contamination.
Always use in a clean, dry, uncontaminated field (isolation recommended).
Use Scotchbond Universal DCA if dual-cure resin materials are being used (for indirect restorations).
⚠️ Safety Guidelines for Using 3M ESPE Adper Single Bond Universal Adhesive
To ensure safe and effective use of the adhesive in clinical practice, follow these important safety precautions:
🧴 1. Avoid Skin and Eye Contact
The adhesive contains methacrylate monomers, which may cause skin or eye irritation.
Use gloves, protective eyewear, and face masks while handling.
In case of contact:
Skin: Wash immediately with soap and water.
Eyes: Rinse thoroughly with water and seek medical attention.
☢️ 2. Use in a Well-Ventilated Area
Vapors from the solvent (like ethanol or acetone) can be irritating when inhaled in large amounts.
Ensure proper air circulation in the operatory.
🔥 3. Keep Away from Heat and Flame
It contains volatile solvents, making it flammable.
Store away from open flames, heating elements, and sunlight.
🧪 4. Storage Safety
Store at room temperature (15–25°C).
Do not refrigerate or freeze.
Keep the bottle tightly closed when not in use to prevent solvent evaporation.
🚫 5. Avoid Cross-Contamination
Do not touch the applicator tip to the bottle or tooth.
Use a new disposable applicator for each patient.
👨⚕️ 6. For Dental Professional Use Only
This is a professional-grade material and should not be used by non-professionals.
Read the Manufacturer’s Instructions for Use (IFU) before application.
