Let’s talk about ABA…Why is it that when a neurotypical child learns a new skill, we call it parenting or teaching… but when an autistic child learns the same skill, through ABA suddenly it’s “ableism”?
Think about it. No one bats an eye when we teach neurotypical kids how to tie their shoes, write their name, or sit at the dinner table. In fact, we praise the teachers and the parents.
But if an autistic child is taught those same skills through ABA therapy? Some people scream abuse.
ABA isn’t about changing who our kids are and making them not autistic. It’s about giving them tools. Skills that can open doors, reduce frustration, keep them safe, and help them communicate in a world that isn’t built for them. Yes, Charlie learned to use an AAC device in ABA!
Helping a child learn how to ask for what they need, cross the street safely, or tolerate a doctor’s visit isn’t cruel. It’s love!
The double standard is unfair imo, especially to the families like mine, living this reality every day.
