A closer look at taste buds is revealing why some people experience lasting effects after COVID-19. 🦠
scientists have identified measurable changes inside taste buds that may explain why a small group of people continue to lose sweet, bitter and umami flavors - even more than a year after infection. Findings showed lower levels of a key protein that helps taste cells detect flavors, along with altered taste bud organization.
This is the first study to directly connect patients’ reported taste changes to physical differences inside taste cells.
