When you meet someone, why meet them based on a memory you carry of them? Why do this? Why do we do this? We do this because the sense of ‘I’, the ego in each of us, seeks security in relations. But it only seeks security because fear is present. If there were no fear, we would have no idea of any need for security in relations.”

Ramana Maharshi: There is only one experience. What are the worldly experiences but those built up on the false ‘I’? Ask the most successful man of the world if he knows his Self. He will say “No”. What can anyone know without knowing the Self? All worldly knowledge is built upon such a flimsy foundation.

The body is an episode of the dream, like a scene in a movie. Sometimes it's fine, sometimes it's unwell, but it’s not you. When a terminally ill person hears a really funny joke, they stop being a patient for a few moments. When there is deep sleep, you don’t feel the body. Therefore, the body is just a part of the movie of life that the mind has made very important.

Ramana Maharshi: What is birth? It is birth of ego. Once born you reach something; if you reach it you return also. Therefore leave off all this verbiage! Be as you are. See who you are and remain as the Self, free from birth, going, coming and returning.

Questioner: True. However often this truth is heard, still it eludes us and we forget it.
