The Healthy Diabetic is a trusted source of information dedicated to better health, education and advocacy for people with diabetes. The website’s creator, LeAnne Rains Benedetto, is an award-winning journalist who has reported and produced from newsrooms around the world. She is currently the owner/operator of LeAnne Rains Productions, LLC, and the Creator, Executive Producer and Host of The Healthy Diabetic. LeAnne fostered her passion for journalism during working internships in the late 1980s at WJXT‐ TV in Jacksonville, Florida, and KXAS‐TV in Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas. In 1989 she was hired as the weekend anchor and producer/weekday reporter for WAND‐TV in Decatur, Illinois. WAVY‐TV brought her to Hampton Roads, Virginia, in 1990 to co‐anchor the weekend news and join the investigative news team. She won an American Women in Radio & Television Award for her moving series on women braving experimental breast cancer treatment at Duke University Medical Center and their struggle to get these innovative treatments covered by insurance. LeAnne fulfilled a life‐long dream in 1994 by quitting her job, selling most of her possessions and traveling and working around the world for more than a year. Her first stop was Rome, Italy, where she worked out of the CNN bureau as a free‐lance reporter during the visit of President Bill Clinton in June of 1994. By November, she was producing news segments for ITN in London, England. In January of 1995, LeAnne was hired by APTV in London, England, to produce and report for the international video feed AP was distributing to news organizations around the world. In April, LeAnne set off on the final leg of her round the world adventure traveling to Norway, Sweden, Holland, Germany, Spain, Austria, France, Switzerland, China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and New Zea‐ land before returning to Hampton Roads. WTKR‐TV in Norfolk, Virginia, hired LeAnne to co‐anchor the 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. news shows and join its investigative news team in October of 1995. Three children later, LeAnne decided to focus on her family and left TV news in May of 2001. Radio came calling with a family‐friendly job offer a year later. LeAnne joined The Breakfast Bunch on 101.3 2WD as News Director and morning radio personality. She joined TFC Recycling in 2004 as Communications Director, managing the branding, advertising and public relations for the company. March of 2008 would bring a new challenge. LeAnne was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Shocked by the challenges of managing the disease, she decided to become active in the organizations that help others with diabetes and use her expertise in communication to deliver the best information to diabetics of all types and ages. She was asked to join the Leadership Board of the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Diabetes Association as Media/Communications Director. LeAnne created and developed the concept for The Healthy Diabetic to elevate awareness of diabetes. LeAnne Rains Benedetto lives in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with her husband, two daughters and son. In addition to her work on the South Hampton Roads Chapter of the ADA, she is currently serving on the Board of Trustees of The Williams School, in Norfolk, Virginia.
