TITLE: Advanced Prostate Cancer Treatment Now Available in Botswana
Botswana has taken a significant step forward in the treatment of prostate cancer with the completion of the country's first ever case of Prostate Seed Brachytherapy. This innovative procedure was carried out by Dr. Daou Gdeh a Urologist along with his colleague Dr. Antonia Bunga, a Radiation Oncologist. The procedure was conducted in a state-of-the-art operating theatre at Medlane Day Hospital on Saturday, the 18th of February. Dr. Doau Gdeh consults at Bokamoso Private Hospital as well as Sidilega Private Hospital while Dr. Antonia Bunga can be contacted at Zeta Oncology Centre.
Prostate Brachytherapy is a form of internal radiation therapy that involves placing small radioactive "seeds" inside the prostate gland to destroy cancer cells. The main advantage of this treatment is that it is a single day procedure, which delivers focused radiation directly to the prostate gland while sparing normal organs like the bladder and the back passage.
The successful completion of this case is a significant milestone for the country's medical community, as it means that men with Prostate Cancer now have access to an advanced form of treatment that was not previously available in Botswana.
Speaking about the successful procedures, Dr. Gdeh and Dr. Bunga expressed their excitement for the future of prostate cancer treatment in Botswana, stating "We are proud to have been able to provide this advanced treatment option to patients in Botswana. This marks the beginning of a new era in the treatment of prostate cancer in the country, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have on the health and wellbeing of our patients. We recommend that men attend their local clinics and General Practitioners to determine their risk of developing prostate cancer and referred for specialist care if needed.”
Overall, this is an exciting development for the country's medical community and is expected to have a significant impact on the treatment of prostate cancer in Botswana. The successful completion of the first-ever cases of Prostate Brachytherapy will provide hope and confidence to men and their families who are dealing with this disease.
