Exploring Dynamics of Palliative Care with Dr. Norman Carl Swart

As we discuss palliative care for this episode, Wellness Series With Lucia recognizes the role of our Nurses. Happy International Nurses Day.

World Health Organization (WHO) defines palliative care as, “an approach that improves the quality of life of patients (adults and children) and their families who are facing problems associated with life-threatening illness. It prevents and relieves suffering through the early identification, correct assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, whether physical, psychosocial or spiritual.”

Join Wellness Series with Lucia as we explore and create a better understanding of Palliative care with Dr. Norman Carl Swart.

Dr. Norman Carl Swart is an advanced practice nurse in oncology and palliative care, and a lecturer at the University of Botswana’s School of Nursing in Gaborone, Botswana. He has previously worked for the Ministry of Health of Botswana and as a clinician at Athlone General Hospital, Princess Marina Hospital and ministry of Local Government at Mogoditshane Clinic.

He has a Masters of Science in Nursing (Adult-Gerontology Oncology & Palliative Care ), attained from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. He also holds a PhD in Nursing from the same University. He is currently a post-doctoral (post-PhD) fellow in Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. His research interests are in oncology and palliative care nursing focusing on symptom management, self-management, and quality of life of cancer patients and other chronically ill patients.

Dr Swart is a member of Botswana Nurses Union and the Botswana Hospice and Palliative Care Association
